Chapter 18

One week later, Marc once again found himself amongst a large group of no less than a hundred redneck werewolves. Only this time, he was inside the arena with the others who were waiting to compete.

He’d only caught a few rare glimpses of Bronaugh during all that time, and he’d never gotten close enough to warn her about what was going to happen. He dreaded seeing the look that would surely be on her face when she saw him here, doing what he was about to do. Maybe he’d luck out and they wouldn’t pick her for any of that day’s events. Then he scoffed to himself. He wouldn’t be so lucky. She was new meat. They’d use her until the crowd got tired of her. And if they were as enthusiastic as they were last week, it was going to take a long time for them to be tired of a new female in the game.

Especially one as bonnie and stubborn and brave as his Bronaugh.

His thoughts were interrupted by Stone’s grinning face popping up in front of his own. “Come on, Seattle. We’re up first!”

“Aye. I’m coming, I’m coming.” Marc stood up and tried to appear enthusiastic as he followed Stone to the end of the arena where the dirt bikes were waiting for their riders. “What event is it going tae be again?”

“Barrel racing, man! Keegan is starting today off with a bang. You know what you gotta do, right?” Stone straddled the bike and sat waiting for Marc to answer before starting it.

Barrel racing? Marc racked his brain for what he’d been told about this one, but his mind had gone completely blank. “Remind me again what this one is aboot?”

Stone kick-started the bike and revved the engine a few times before shouting over the sound of the motor, “You just have to remember two things. First, stay the fuck away from the soul suckers. Always keep one of the others between you and them as you weave in and out.”

Marc frowned. “But what aboot them? The lasses?”

“What about them?” The playful smile fell from Stone’s face. “They’re nothing but Fae, man. Fae chicks aren’t good for anything except sucking my cock and using for bait.”

Marc was shocked into silence at the vehemence in his voice. But just like that, it was gone and the fun-loving smile was back. It happened so quickly he half wondered if he’d imagined it.

“Second, don’t fall off your bike. Or you’re completely screwed, man. And not in a good way! But if you do, duck down and try to stay out of sight.” With that last parting advice, he eased open the throttle and rode out into the center of the arena to the cheer of the crowd. Standing up as he took the dirt ramps, he waved to the crowd before dropping back down onto the seat and popping the front tire up off the ground a few times.

Marc started his bike and headed to the center of the ring to join him.
