CHAPTER FOURTEEN

Shane turned away, the bite of Mike’s aftershave still on his lips. He had a job to do here, and it wasn’t making out in underground passages. Focus.

Keeping his light trained on his feet, he crept ahead, watching for the other caver’s light. It flashed once more, leading him to a tall, narrow slot passage they easily might have missed going this direction. It was shielded by the wall and only visible once he passed it and looked back.

“Check it out.”

“Step back,” Mike said, his usual frown firmly in place.

“Yes, sir,” Shane said, then bit down a smile when Mike flashed him a flat look. “Stepping back.”

Mike rounded the rock wall and studied the new passageway. It didn’t go very deep before opening to the right. The caver’s light flashed again, but this time—

“Did you hear that?” Shane said.

Mike had; his back had gone even more rigid than usual at the sound. He gave a tight nod. “Like a furnace.”

“Or a blowtorch.” Luke kept a small one in his kitchen, but he had a welding torch in his shop to repair machinery. “Maybe they’re salvaging old mining equipment.” He tried to see past Mike and set a hand to the rock wall. “Whoa.”

“What?”

“The rock’s warm.”

Mike laid a hand on the wall, fingertips first, then palm. Then he lifted it off again, index finger raised for Shane to wait where he was.

“Hurry.”

Mike turned to glare at him. Damn, he was sexy.

“C’mon, I want to see what they’re up to—”

Mike had turned swiftly, crowding him. “I gotta job to do, too. You gonna let me do it?”

I’ll let you do anything, he wanted to say. Almost did say because Mike’s mouth was so close, the scent of his breath mints tickling Shane’s senses. It’d been really hard not to kiss him fully back there in the dark. Mike’s heartbeat had been strong against Shane’s hand, the heat of his body warming Shane’s as well as any fireplace. He hadn’t been able to resist a little peck, his lips finding the hard muscle of Mike’s jaw. Mike’s heat was on him again now, echoed by the warmth of the rock wall under his palm.

The torch-like sound came again, and Mike turned toward it. Shane stayed put, fingers drumming the wall, as Mike reached the end of the short passage and looked to the right. His brow drew down as he shone his flashlight beam all around.

“What is it?”

Mike held a finger to his lips. The sound had stopped, and Shane vibrated with wanting to join him, to see past his shoulder. Wished they were in their otter forms so they could telepath. But he held himself in check and watched as Mike stepped out of the slot passage…

…then slipped. One hand scrabbled for purchase behind him and then was gone in a series of grunts and the clatter of his flashlight bouncing off rock.

“Mike!” Shane ran to the opening and shone his light into the space beyond.

It was pitch-dark, no sign of the light they’d seen from the tunnel.
