5.2.5 Influence of Proximate Analyses in the Flammability of Fuels

The influence of volatile and ash contents in the flammability of coals have been widely studied.

An increased on the volatile content (meaning a decrease on the ash content) produces an increase on the easiness of ignition of dust clouds and on the severity of the phenomenon that will take place. Furthermore, the highest the volatiles content of the sample, the highest the inert content needed to avoid an explosion. Palmer proposed the following expression to determine this relationship [19]:
