Chapter Thirteen

Durg returned a short while later without either brother. Ronan was beside me on the brown couch I'd refused to sit on earlier, a cushion separating us. Durg sat in a matching brown chair to my right.

"Ronan and I are looking for my friend's daughter, Lena Amador, and her boyfriend, Sage Sloan." I showed him a picture of the kids on my phone. Tasha had sent it to me yesterday at my request.

"They're pack, Durg." Ronan leaned forward, elbows on his knees. "It would mean a lot if you could take a look."

The ogre peered at the photo. "We don't have much to do with shifters, to be frank. Other than Ronan here, since we do occasionally patronize his drinking establishment."

"What about your brothers? Could they have seen the young wolves around?"

"I'll ask, but Ronan, you know we don't want trouble with your pack. I can't imagine any of my family—even Novik—kidnapping a couple of shifter teenagers in a fit of rage and making trouble."

That was strange, because I could picture Novik doing exactly that. He didn't exactly seem to have a stranglehold on his temper.

"Do you know anything about a house with a guillotine doorway and a toilet portal?"

Durg blinked at me. Then he blinked again. "You're kidding, right?"

"No."

His handsome face screwed into a frown. "We own a small house in an alfalfa field not far from here, but it's just a rundown house we're considering renovating. No guillotine, no, uh, toilet portal."

"Are you missing any magic books?" I tossed the question out there casually, watching for a change of expression, and I got one—an eye twitch.

"Yes. For perfectly legitimate reasons, but they are missing," he replied stiffly. "One of my brothers sold several of our books a few months ago." He was unhappy about the sale and it showed. "We've been trying to buy them back."

In my former life as a killer for hire, I'd come across a lot of liars. No surprise, since I'd only ever hunted very bad paranormals doing very bad things they tended to lie about. I wasn't perfect at spotting truth tellers, but I was pretty good at it.

Durg was a truth teller. However, that didn't mean he wasn't lying in a way that was truth to him—some people excelled in self-delusion. I had more questions, but I wasn't going to get anything else out of him without resorting to threats, and I wasn't ready to do that.

Yet.

"Thank you for your time. You'll let us know if you hear anything?" I stood.

"Yes, of course."

Durg rose, and the three of us headed to the doorway leading to the tunnel that would take us to the front door. It was a different doorway, as the one we'd entered the room through was now a solid dirt wall. Something I should have noticed sooner.

Betty's words when talking about the tunnel entrance came back to me. It moves.

I did not want to be inside one of the ogre tunnels when it decided to move. Magic of
