Trent stepped back, needing more space. Being in Jadeâs presence was like riding the worldâs wildest roller coasterâwarm and familiar one minute, then on-fire hot, or off-the-rails terrifying. He cleared his throat loudly, trying to regroup. His answer had been abrupt, but heâd come very close to oversharing and that couldnât happen.
âI...uh...should probably go.â
âYeah, sure.â Her expression cooled. The moment was broken. âHow long did you say you were staying in Gallant Lake?â
âAs long as I need to. We have unfinished business, Jade. Or at least, unfinished conversations.â
âAbout whoever burned you?â
âThatâs a hard no.â He started to scowl, then saw the hurt in her expression. He sighed instead, staring at the floor. âSomeday, maybe. But...not right now. I donât want it creeping into my current life.â
He didnât want memories of Cindy anywhere near Jade.
She tipped her head so she could look up into his eyes. âI just have to point out that if youâre bringing it up, itâs already creeping into your current life.â
He snorted. âMaybe I should fire my therapist and hire you.â He thought about what heâd just said and held up his hands. âOn second thought, no thanks.â
She grinned. âCoward! So what are these unfinished conversations you think we need to have?â
âWe still have a lot to learn about each other, Jade. I think thatâs important if weâre going to do this together.â He nodded toward her rounded stomach, where heâd just felt a child...his child...do somersaults.
âWe donât have to do anything together.â Her smile slowly faded. âI meant what I said. I can raise her alone.â
âAnd I meant what I said,â he replied. âIâm not the kind of man whoâd ever let that happen.â
âBut seriously...how long are you staying?â She didnât seem keen on the idea.
He shrugged. âEnough time to wrap my head around whatâs happening. Enough time for us to spend time together...â He thought of the kiss theyâd just shared and shook his head. âNot that kind of time.â
She started laughing. âI didnât say a damn thing, so who are you warning? Iâm thinking I was right in calling you a coward, Trent Michaels.â
They stared at each other, the air suddenly charged with sexual tension again. Apparently it didnât matter how close they were to each other. Just the suggestion of intimacy was enough to start the fireworks.
Retreat! Retreat!
âI think itâs time for me to head back to the resort. Do you want to... I donât know...do something tomorrow? Dinner?â He ran his fingers through his hair, and a honey-colored shock fell across his forehead. âThis is hella awkward, isnât it?â
When they got to the back door, she folded her arms on her chest. âWeâre going to be parents together, and we kiss really well, but that doesnât make us a couple or anything. Weâre not dating. We donât need to be joined at the hip. I donât need a keeper.â
His hand rested on the doorknob. âConsidering you nearly passed out in my arms earlier, Iâm not sure thatâs true. But if youâre saying you need a little space, I can do that.
