Shay sat in the third seat back on the bus. She could tell Dixon was irritated she didn’t sit up front, but she wasn’t ready to talk to him right now. She had to think things out.

For some reason, she’d put herself between Dixon and Cat, offering to help cat with the decorating and organizing of the gift shop. She was actually looking forward to the work. That was right up her line.

This vacation is sure turning out to be anything but relaxing!

Shay sat back and watched the gorgeous scenery flash by. Could she ever get tired of seeing the pine trees, the mountain, the river in the distance? Would she get bored in a place as lovely as Sprucewood like Cat had?

Once more she tried to imagine herself living in Sprucewood. Could she find a job? Open a party planning business? Maybe she should have gotten to know some of the locals the other night after all. She’d start today at the festival. She might even have to trail Dixon around and get him to introduce her to people.

As they pulled into town, she could see the booths set up around town square. The streets were clear of snow except for a few piles which had been shoveled into corners. The booths were all covered by white topped tents which meant even if it began to snow, they could still sell their items.

Shay found herself happily anticipating this shopping adventure. She’d never done anything like this before. She did most of her shopping in a mall, although she’d always read about small town festivals and seen them on the Hallmark channel. This was her chance to experience it for herself.

When the bus was parked, all the other guests stood and filed out. Shay stayed back and waited. As the last person stepped off the bus, she stood up and moved forward. Dixon was standing outside the bus door.

“Dixon!” Shay exclaimed.

“Uhm… Yes?”

“Listen, I’m sorry if you’re mad that I offered to help Cat at the gift shop. I didn’t mean to get between you and her, but I don’t see how organizing and decorating a shop will cause her to want to stay in Sprucewood.”

She thought she saw Dixon pull back at her statement.

“I don’t mean to be rude, Dixon.”

“You’re not. You are absolutely right. I’ve tried everything I can think of to keep Cat interested in staying here, but nothing works. I guess I was trying to guilt her into staying.”

Shay felt sorry for him, but she did still think that Cat was too young for him. A girl her age should be out on her own for the first time. Getting a job, finding an apartment.

The air was filled with Christmas music, every booth had handmade crafts or food. Many of them were burning candles with the aromas of Christmas; pine, peppermint, gingerbread.

“So, do you want to show me around?” Shay asked Dixon. She noted the surprise on his face.

“Sure, but I don’t want to show you any favoritism over any of the other guests.
