The Life and Death of Eeva-Maija

Eeva-Maija Kaartinen was born in Oulu, Finland, on August 17, 1923. She was then her mother’s only daughter. Three brothers had been born before her.

Eeva-Maija had some distinctive personality traits in which she differed from her brothers. For example, she did not like to eat, and sometimes, in order to avoid eating, she would hide food given to her. She liked fish and fresh milk, but disliked meat and sour milk, which other members of the family enjoyed eating. In fact, she refused to eat meat and sour milk.

She was fond of music and of dancing and learned to dance almost before she could walk. She had been taught the steps of the Charleston (a popular dance of the 1920s).

When she was a little more than 5 years old, Eeva-Maija became seriously ill with what was diagnosed as influenza, and she died in Helsinki on November 24, 1928.

During Eeva-Maija’s final illness, Salli Kaartinen promised to buy her a toy baby carriage.

Salli Kaartinen was grief-stricken when she lost her only daughter, and she longed to have Eeva-Maija return to her. She was at the time already pregnant with Marja-Liisa, who was born almost exactly 6 months after Eeva-Maija’s death.
