BAKARI ENTERED THE lobby of the office building and showed his credentials to the night guard. Verifying his false name on the visitor list, the guard gave him a pass and instructed him to head to the back warehouse. Black shoes clicked on the cold floor as he walked under the fluorescent lights. Arriving at a metal door, he rang the bell.

Several moments later, a man in a white lab coat pulled the door open. “Hello, Bakari. Right on time as usual.”

“Hello, Dr. Tyson.”

Waving him through the door, he asked, “The guard didn’t give you any trouble?”

“No,” Bakari said, following him into the warehouse. “I was on the list as you instructed. My car is parked at the loading dock.”

“Perfect. The last two canisters are ready for transport. This batch is particularly potent. It’s an extremely rare combination. Finding an antidote would require extensive cataloguing by a very advanced software program.”

“Two of my enemies are expert hackers, but hopefully, the different combinations will overwhelm any analytic software they create. I appreciate your attention to detail.”

“You have my payment?”

“Yes.” Reaching in his pocket, Bakari pulled out the vial of Crimeous’s cloned blood.

“Excellent,” Dr. Tyson said, holding it up to inspect it against the stark ceiling light. “There are so many formulas I can create with this.”

“Should I even ask what you have in mind?”

“That wasn’t our deal, Bakari, and besides, you’ll know soon enough. After all, you weren’t the only immortal raised in the human world.” Dr. Tyson’s incisors glistened behind his slightly sinister smile, relaying the Vampyre portion of his heritage.

“I’ll leave you to it then. I wish you the best, Quaygon.”

“Dr. Tyson is fine,” he murmured. “Can’t have anyone overhearing my immortal name.”

“Thank you, Dr. Tyson.”

They shook hands, the chemist instructing several of the warehouse employees to help Bakari load his car.

Once the containers were loaded, Bakari left the St. Louis warehouse, wondering when he would see Dr. Tyson again. Bakari would most likely need his help to assume his rightful place as sovereign over Etherya’s realm. For now, he was content to let Dr. Tyson stew in the human world, which was insignificant—but if he chose to enter the immortal world without Bakari’s permission, there would be consequences.

Quaygon, son of Letheria, was a hybrid and therefore an abomination. If he knew what was good for him, he’d live out the rest of his days with the heathen humans. Otherwise, he was doomed.
