Chapter 20-Calista

"Just… cry?"

"Yep. Let it out."

I don't understand. Maybe it's my upbringing, but I never believed crying did anyone any good. If anything, I'd always believed that the days where I couldn't hold in my tears were my weakest. As if tears were the last vestiges of my strength leaking out. I’d always felt so frustrated that every time I got angry, I'd cry. It felt like I was taken less seriously in those moments, like I was being unreasonable to be crying over things that were perceived as being silly. In hindsight, I realize how overwhelmed I really was, that my body and mind were holding back this immense secret. But even after my powers came out, I struggled not to cry when Hawthorne angered me, or Seth showed me tenderness, or Draven sacrificed his own wants and needs to protect me from himself.

Seth must see the confusion written on my face. He palms my cheek, tilting my head so I'm looking into deep pools of raw emotion. The depths of his blue-grey eyes are filled with compassion, and they reflect every bit of the anguish he carries from others. My hand, which was previously digging into his shoulder in my agitation over just how high up we are, raises to cup his jaw, running my fingers over the stubble on his cheeks.

"Don't hold back your tears, angel. They're not a sign of weakness, but a testament to your strength. It takes immense heart to feel the pain of others, and bravery to admit when you yourself are feeling weak. In every tear, there's healing power, and when you let your emotions flow, you free your heart and mind of heaviness that would otherwise hold you down. It's through the release of your pain that you find the path forward."

Tears are streaming from my eyes as he speaks, for a multitude of reasons. I'm so overwhelmed with emotion that I couldn't stop them if I did try, but I'm also so overcome with wonder and awe at the man hovering above me. It's also freezing, and the sharp wind is stinging my eyes and making them water to the point that my vision is blurry. I had to conjure up a ball of warm light, placing it in my chest to keep my body warm enough to withstand the cold up here. I wasn't sure it would work, but it was worth a try, and I'm thankful once again for my instincts. As much as it helps to have the magic heating my body, it's still damn cold up here.

"I've never done this with anyone else," Seth tells me quietly. "How much do you trust me?"

I cough out a laugh through my tears. "Implicitly," I assure him.

"Remember you said that," he says jokingly, and I marvel at his ability to soothe my nerves despite carrying so much himself. "Just hold on to my hand, and don't let go. I won't let you fall."

I know he won't let me fall,
