CHAPTER ELEVEN

POINTING TO JESUS

As the worship leader placed her fingers on the keys of the electric piano, the congregation lifted their hands to worship. I went forward to receive prayer along with others who responded to the minister’s invitation to receive of God’s anointing. There was no warning or indication to prepare me for what happened next. As the minister placed his hand on my head, my body crumpled to the floor. But I went somewhere else—somewhere in the realm of the spirit.

I looked around to see where I was and realized I was standing on a circular platform surrounded on every side by a huge crowd of people. This platform was lifted slightly above the ocean of people who were tightly sandwiched together, shoulder to shoulder. A sense of unrest—a desperate hopelessness—surged like an electric current through the multitude.

I was dressed in a dirty, torn outfit. To my surprise, I wasn’t ashamed of the way I was dressed. Instead, I wanted everyone to see and understand why I was wearing the tattered garments. So, I lifted my voice to get the attention of the people. As I raised my voice, the desperate, hopeless faces turned their faces toward me to see my dirty clothes and hear what I had to say.

Their interest in my story seemed supernatural. As I described in detail what had happened to my outfit, the reason why my clothes had become so tattered and ragged, I could sense the shift in the atmosphere as the people began to process my words.

There was a moment in the telling of my story when I recognized I had the attention of the people. That moment was my purpose and aim. Every embarrassing detail, every uncomfortable explanation, they were shared to achieve this moment.

When I had their attention, I immediately pointed them to my Lord, Jesus Christ. He stood on a pedestal above us, brightly shining in His glory. As the people turned their faces to Him, they found hope. They encountered the One with the desire and ability to change their lives in the same way He had restored mine.

In my vision, I repeated this process over and over, gaining the attention of the crowds and quickly diverting their attention to Jesus. When the vision ended, I understood exactly what it meant. My assignment was clear. The tattered garments and shame of my past are instruments to draw people’s attention to Jesus.

But the tattered garments by themselves would not inspire hope if people couldn’t see the change in my life. The pedestal I stood on represents what the Lord has done to transform my life. He has filled my life with His goodness.

My Before and After Pictures

I love true stories, especially stories of transformation. My favorites are the extreme weight-loss testimonies because they show the before and after pictures that reveal how dramatically their lives are changed. In the same way, I want you to know the extreme turnaround the Lord has made in my life.
