CHAPTER 8

At nightfall Eryk came up from the underground chamber into the arsenal. The day had been one long blur as he had struggled against the change threatening to overtake him. He vaguely remembered tearing at the suffocating restriction of his clothes, hitting the walls, and cursing the long-dead Mitah for what he had done to him. In all the centuries Eryk had spent visiting Terra, he had never been reduced to such a state. He also knew what the consequences would be if he lingered.

If I don’t cross over tonight, I shall die here at the hands of my vassals before Sharad even has a chance to attack.

The outer door opened as Astrid and some of the guards arrived. As soon as they saw him, they froze. The taste of their fear spilling into the air brought him to acute awareness, and made him edge backward.

“Make no sudden moves,” the chatelaine warned the others.

Eryk glanced down at himself. Now he saw that one sleeve and part of the collar remained on his body, and small bits of plaster covered him. The left leg of his trousers had split from ankle to thigh, and he’d put his boots on the wrong feet. When he reached up to drag a hand through his hair, he felt the iciness of the sweat that soaked it.

“Forgive me,” he muttered as he stepped out of his boots and righted them. “I am not quite myself tonight.”

Astrid put her hand on her baton. “My lord, do you know my name?”

“Yes, Mrs. Nelson.” He gestured for all of them to keep their distance. “I need you to lure Rebecca from her room. When you return to the hold, have one of the men deliver a hand-written note asking her to come to the gazebo. Write that I have resigned from my job, and I wish to bid her good-bye. Sign it with the name Eryk Vand. That should lure her out of the darksilver chamber.”

The chatelaine sighed. “She will be upset when she does not find you waiting for her in the gardens, my lord.”

“I cannot see her again.” Eryk dragged in a calming breath before he added, “Before you give her the note, place sentries to keep watch over the gardens. If I come there, if I approach her, they are to end me at once.”

She nodded. “How long will you stay on Teren, my lord?”

“Not long. If I do not return, warn our allies here, destroy the darksilver, leave the territory, and never return.” He met her gaze, and the calm acceptance he saw there made him straighten. “I am sorry to leave you in such danger, Astrid.”

“We will do our best, my lord,” she assured him. “When Ms. Ward doesn’t find you she will come and ask questions. What more should I tell her?”

“Say that I became suddenly ill, and had to leave to get treatment,” he said, gritting his teeth against the urges gnawing away deep inside him. “Have guards at the ready to deal with me inside the hold.
