All in all, it was another good fall, with Mac and Nin McCrea, Clara Spiegel, Slim Hawks, Taylor Williams and a host of others on the scene. Hem and Coop hunted in the marshes of Silver Creek, in the fields near Shoshone and in the wilderness near Craters of the Moon. They even went southwest to the Glenns Ferry area to get a look at the Idaho section of the Oregon Trail.102
Things were going so well that several of the friends, including the Hemingways and Coopers, decided to stay through the Christmas holidays. All three of Hemâs sons arrived, as well as two of Hemâs friends from Cuba. Mary sang in a local choir and loved it. The presence of friends and family was particularly meaningful to Hem, still smarting from the deaths of Max Perkins and lifelong friend Katy Dos Passos just months earlier. Lloyd shot one of his most memorable photos on New Yearâs Eve 1947: Hem, movie producer Henry Hathaway, Coop and Ingrid Bergman engaged in what appears to have been a fascinating conversation. As far as is known, it was the first and only time that the writer and two co-stars of For Whom the Bell Tolls were together.
There would never be another autumn and winter like the one in â47.
