The apostle Paul was an aristocrat, well-educated, and belonged to the highest order of Jewish priesthood. He was given all that comes with this hierarchical position! He, as a Pharisee, was commissioned to seek out Christians and put them in prison or, in some cases, to kill them. He was good at his work until one day on the way to Damascus, he was hit by a blinding light and jarred to the ground. Jesus spoke to him and asked him why Paul was crucifying Him. All of this changed Paul forever. Not only did he travel over 10,000 miles, mostly on foot, to tell the story of Jesus, but Paul took no money for his ministry…he worked as a tent maker to pay his way. He worked!

Star Parker, who we profiled earlier, said it best when she summarized the far-left policy of sending billions of dollars into the underprivileged areas of America, turning them into socialistic receivers instead of capitalistic earners. Those policies have devastated those communities, giving millions a total reliance on the government versus their own individual drive and efforts. The message is basic and obvious…you do not have to work your way out of poverty! You cannot! So, work becomes a negative word. “Are you kidding me? You want me to work Monday through Friday and be on time?” As you have read this chapter, do you wonder why the far-left liberal desires to eliminate Christianity?

What can we do about the consistent downward spiral of our underprivileged and underserved communities? What is a better strategy? The following true story is what is happening in a small way in Milwaukee, Wisconsin—a perfect model that can be replicated across America. Deonte came from the inner city and was caught in a passion for basketball. He was a great athlete and was moved along with his gifts through high school, college, and professional basketball. He found his way out of the gangs, drugs, and deep poverty! Deonte then realized that he needed to go back to Milwaukee and help others find a way out.

Deonte started with a small group of boys playing basketball in their spare time. His next step was to leverage the kids’ passion for basketball by influencing them to find a dream for a better life and demonstrating that there were opportunities for them in the world market. He said, “You can do it…” and they were capable with effort! They could earn their way to a better life, and he provided them with the tools to accomplish this daunting task to kids who thought they had no chance to escape. Their role models were that fat cat driving a Mercedes, pimping, selling drugs, and playing in the gang world. They saw the many who sat on their front porch collecting government checks. That was their life, the role models, and their future. This life was constantly being drummed into their minds by the media and the politicians who were telling of the misery, the deaths, and the fact that it was the rich and the police who were their enemy.
