CHAPTER SIXTEEN

“If you keep cooking for me, you’ll never be allowed to leave,” I said the next morning, wandering into my kitchen.

Dan stood at the stove, shirtless, flipping pancakes with finesse.

“Maybe that’s part of my master plan.”

I wrapped my arms around his waist and pressed a kiss to his shoulder blade. “This is the second time now and you haven’t burnt a thing.”

Chuckling, he turned away from the stove and tucked me into his side. “It’s been years since I burnt the casserole at your mam’s. You have to let it go someday.”

I pursed my lips. “Pretty sure you destroyed more than a casserole.” I rested my chin on his pec and grinned up at him. “If I remember correctly, you were banned from the kitchen for every single Sunday dinner after you burnt the gravy too.”

“It’s liquid. I have no idea how you burn gravy,” he scoffed, the amused twinkle in his eye softening his words.

“My mother doesn’t agree with you.” I patted him on the chest, my eyes dropping to the bubbling pancake in the skillet. He slipped the spatula under the drying batter and flipped it. Perfectly golden on the bottom. “If Phoebe sees you flipping pancakes like that, you definitely won’t be allowed to leave.”

I nabbed a pancake from the prepared stack and stepped away. He shook his head at my impatience while I pulled out a stool and settled in for the show. I drank him in. The rising sun caressed his naked back and set his auburn hair on fire. He hummed happily to himself as he worked through the last of the batter. He really was something. How I’d gone five years without him was beyond me.

“When does your mother normally drop Phoebe off?” He placed the stack of pancakes on the island and turned back to grab plates, cutlery and drinks for us. I wasn’t lying when I said he’d never be allowed to leave. A girl could get used to this.

“Around six, but I have to meet the girls at one.” We had the entire morning to ourselves. What a novelty.

He grinned at me. “What shall we do with ourselves?”

I eyed him. “I can’t tell if you’re genuinely asking or if you’re going to drag me back to bed.”

“I’m never going to get enough of you.” He reached for my hand across the worktop we’d fucked on last night. My eyes stuck on his huge hand engulfing mine. Has he cleaned the counter? “But right now, I feel like we should get out of this flat and enjoy the morning, just us two.”

“Do you have anything in mind?” I asked, distracted as I tried to figure out if the island looked shiny because of the surface and the sun or because he’d wiped it over. I really couldn’t tell.

“We could go ice skating.” He tugged on my hand, pulling my attention back to him. “You never did answer my text asking if you’d been, and the rink is still open, so we could…”

“That sounds great.
