Chapter 8

Ennis knew that Lisa was working, but he needed to see her. He only hoped that she was alone and not working with Georgie again. He needed to touch her, to hold her in his arms. No sharing today.

Finding her in the office that she’d taken over, he watched her put her brush to canvas. It was a large structure, and he wondered if this was going to be a single painting or one of a series. If it was a series, it was going to be huge. The piece she was working on had to be at least eight by eight. Instead of going deeper into the room, he paused to watch her, to watch how the artist in her came to life.

The color that she was using was a beautiful shade of green. He didn’t know what she might be working on; she neither had a sketch that she worked from, nor did she have anything drawn on the canvas. But as soon as she started putting the streaks of the green there, he knew it was going to be a tree. Ennis watched quietly.

“You don’t have to sit back there. Come on up here where I can see you.” He laughed as he stood up, bringing his chair with him. “I’m only getting the larger things in place for this one. I don’t know where this is going, but I have to figure out the tree to start with. It’s not going to be an ordinary tree, but one that is showing off the woods.”

“I’m not sure what that means.” She grinned and told him she didn’t either, but that’s what she felt. “I see. And do you normally not have any idea what you’re painting when you start?”

“Never.” She painted a few more strokes, then spoke again. “How was your day? I saw that you were gone when I got up this morning. I’m assuming that you were on call.”

“Yes. Derick was in surgery this morning too, and he asked me to come in early and have a look at one of his patients. I don’t think he’s happy with the way things are going for him.” Lisa asked him what he’d been able to figure out. “I think that he’s being brought in foods that he shouldn’t be eating, and that is affecting his progress.”

“How do you know that?” He told her that he’d found a pizza box by the trash can, and he smelled of garlic. “Oh, well, great detective work there. How you going to keep them from bringing him food?”

“I told them that I’d have to put him in quarantine if they kept it up. I don’t know if that’ll work or not, but I also mentioned that insurance wouldn’t cover that, and it would have to be out of pocket.” He laughed with her. “What have you been doing all day? I heard from Nikki. She said that she met a faerie king.”

“Yes, Rector. I’ve not met him yet myself, but apparently his sister has decided that I need some extra juice.
