Now we will talk about the vulnerabilities that come with the Word. Every Word has points of vulnerability. For Arkte there are three soft spots. The first is your totem, the second is the cruelty of humans, and third is the greed of certain humans. As you work with animals, one or more will become special to you. For Lilith it was wolves. Whichever your totem, you will overspend, over-fascinate, and even blur yourself with the totem. Your friends will notice—and enable you. For example, one of Lilith’s students has put 10,458 pictures of cats on his Facebook wall. Tragic. Another has over 50 owls in her office in various media. Very sad. The second problem does not come with smiles. Since the fuel of magic in general is emotion (as LaVey taught us) the Arkte practitioner can be wrathful or sad when she hears of animal mistreatment. When harnessed into political/social change this is awesome. I remember when Michael Aquino found out that Asian food markets in San Francisco sold live de-shelled turtles. Watching an ex–Green Beret trained in psychological warfare get laws passed quickly in California was like seeing a hurricane hit a beach! But seeing the weeping despair that happens when bad ecological processes are revealed in media is much less entertaining. Suffering comes with Arkte, not mild discomfort. The last soft point is manifest when fake charities rip you off in the name of animals. However, every Arkte follower learns to research charities and movements very well (after that first time you give your birthday money to Save the Gypsy Moth).
