Sunlight filtered into the room, and I tried to push away the grogginess. As I did, flashbacks from the night before assaulted my brain, and I blushed as heat spread through my body. Micah moved restlessly beside me, his arm draped over me. I pushed it to the side and slipped out of the bed.

Clothes littered the floor, and I put my shirt and underwear back on. Remembering I had some spare clothes in the trunk of my car, I did a quick search for my phone, hoping some charge was left and feeling remiss that I hadn’t checked it. I found it in my pant pocket. Fortunately, it had seven percent charge left. I scrolled through a few messages, and a request from Dylan to check in sometime that morning. So far, he’d said, things were under control, and the flow of creatures had stopped.

I gathered the rest of my clothes and tiptoed toward the bathroom door.

“Where are you going, beautiful?”

I spun back to him. God how I’d missed that voice and the sight of his naked body against white sheets.

“I’ve got some clothes in my car, and I want to check on Val. We’ll need to come up with some plans for today. On top of figuring out—”

“Come here,” he said before I could finish, summoning me with his eyes and a crooked finger, which pointed to me and then back to him.

I crawled from the foot of the bed to his arms and snuggled up to him. “I still can’t believe you’re really here. I just wish I could lie in bed with you all day, but the town is under attack, and your father wants to abscond with our daughter.”

He kissed behind my ear and squeezed me close. “We’ll figure this out. Now that we’re back together, nothing can stop us.”

Closing my eyes for a moment, I prayed for such an outcome, but fate had already stolen ten years.

“As much as I don’t want to, I really have to get some clothes and check in with Dylan. Plus, we need to keep an eye on your father. I don’t want him around Val, especially alone.”

“You’re right,” he said, his breath against my back.

I sat up, pivoted back to him, and leaned in, touching my lips lightly to his. “Meet me downstairs. I’ll have coffee.”

Of course it took ten more minutes to actually leave the bed. As I made my way downstairs, I heard voices in the kitchen. When I rounded the corner, I saw Val and Ruby having coffee and eggs.

“Anybody else up?” I asked.

“Not yet,” Ruby said, a smile spreading across her face. “Somebody’s glowing this morning.”

“Oooh, gross,” Val said.

“They’re your parents. There’s nothing gross about it, young lady.” Ruby admonished.

I just wanted to slink under a rock. My face flushed with embarrassment.

“I’m going to run get my bag out of the car. Do you mind finding a charger for my phone?” I held out the device to my daughter, who nodded.

When I stepped outside, a cloudless sky and fall colors of rusty orange, pale green, and daffodil yellow greeted me.
