We reached the car without seeing more than a couple of apparently oblivious humans.

What must it be like to live in their world? To be completely unaware of magic, shifters, demons and the fact we basically ran and dictated everything that ultimately impacted their lives. They were probably better off not knowing.

I stood beside the car and tapped my fingernails against the window. I couldn't bring myself to get in, not yet. The guys wouldn't leave without me and I didn't want to leave without them. We could wait a few minutes.

I looked around me and smelled the air, but there was no immediate sign of any of them. Just Hutton and me. I managed to stop myself from chewing my lip. I was so anxious right now I would probably draw blood.

"They probably can't respond," Hutton said. "They're supposed to be keeping things quiet on their ends, right?"

I nodded. "You're right, of course." In answering me they might reveal themselves to Dagen. That would definitely defeat the purpose. The reminder didn't do much to ease my tension though.

"Are you okay?" Hutton moved around to stand beside me. He tangled his fingers in my hair and lightly kissed my temple. "It sounds like things got pretty intense in there."

"You could say that," I agreed. I was rattled, I didn't mind admitting that to myself. At the end of the day though whatever happened would have happened. Whatever sacrifice I had to make to secure my legacy for the rest of the white wolves and all the others who worked for Ivory Claw, I would make.

Some days I felt a whole lot fucking older than I really was. Like right now.

I was ready to give up everything to keep Dagen from taking anything from me. My body, my life, whatever it took. That was probably not a choice someone should have to make when they were still in their twenties, but here we were.

"I hope you realise how close I was to walking in there and ripping his throat out," Hutton said. "The only reason I didn't is because I knew you would be pissed at me." He gave me a level look. "Would you have really let it go as far as it almost did?"

I met his gaze. "If I had to. I knew when I made this plan what might happen. We all knew it."

"We didn't like it," he said. "If it was up to me, I wouldn't have let you near him."

"I know you wouldn't," I said. "I wouldn't have wanted any of you near him either. Sometimes in war you have to make the hard calls. What kind of general would I be if I let my troops take risks I wouldn't take myself?"

"An alive one," Hutton said. "One without a throat which is already starting to bruise."

"Bruises fade," I said lightly. "Dagen carrying out his threat of annihilating all of us would have a much more lasting impact. I will always do whatever I have to, to prevent the genocide of my pack.
