Chapter Twenty-Seven

After the midday meal, Tylen leaned against the tree where he normally stationed himself to socialize with his people, though he would’ve rather been next to his mate, sitting with the children practicing magic.

Her introduction to his people went well. He read the questions in the gathered faces’ when he explained where he found her and her lack of memory. When glancing at Ryllea, she winked at him and he almost busted out in a laugh. No one fooled that old elf.

He was proud of his mate bravely taking a small amount of food from each basket passed to her and putting it on her plate. He noted others secretly watching her. He cringed inwardly at the scrutiny she was currently under and not even knowing it. He also noted she didn’t like ash bacuri. He didn’t like the food resembling leafy trees either.

Two of the elders came to stand by him. “Interesting female,” one said.

After a pause, the other said, “She is not from our dimension, is she?”

Tylen kept his mouth shut. He would not flat out lie to his elders. Trust had always existed between leader and advisors and he wished to keep the relationship harmonious.

“She has reason to keep everything to herself,” he replied.

“Has she tried on the crown?” the first asked.

“No,” he replied.

The second asked, “Will she?”

“No.”

The two elves jerked their heads toward him. Yes, that wasn’t what they expected, but he knew what his mind said. She didn’t fit the myth.

He said, “She is not the queen of legend.”

The two old men stared at each other for a moment. The second asked, “Will she be a mistress to the king since you desire to wait for the queen of legend?”

“No!” Anger fired through Tylen. How dare they assume he would treat the breath of his heart with such a slight. Hadn’t the elders wanted him to take a female, even if not the queen? He got up in the elder’s face. “If a rumor is so much as whispered of such a thing, I will cut out the liar’s tongue.”

Their eyes grew wide and faces paled. He was sure a threat like that hadn’t been issued since long before he became king. He didn’t mean to be so aggressive, but they were talking about his mate. Both scurried away.

He sighed and ran his fingers through his hair. Returning his attention to the villagers, he schlepped his way to the group of women weaving baskets. They were always talkative and knew the general mood of the elves.

“Greeting, King Tylen,” Amalia said, bowing her head. Her smile frightened him a bit. She had a sharp tongue and spoke her mind. “Your female, King, is not part of our world, is she?”

Dragon shit. Had everyone figured that out already?

“No worries, King,” she continued, “only those of us who pay attention know this. And the ladies here.” Several of said ladies giggled. This couldn’t be good. The question was did they know where her home was?

“No matter where she is from,” the female said, “we are in agreement that she will make a good queen for you.
