Chapter Ten

Toni’s mind drifted from the conversation, Sandale’s kiss affecting her more than she’d expected. Probably because it was so out of character. She’d literally known him only a few minutes, but everything Serena told her had her expecting a completely different person than he actually was. He was edgier, quicker, more enticing than Serena had made him out to be. Serena had described a man who was calm, gentle and patient.

He was none of those now and he intrigued her.

“What should we do with Akasha? If we release him, he may lead Grandall back to us.”

Baruch’s question brought her mind back to their escape. “If we can get him to promise not to tell, he won’t.” The thought of leaving him behind bothered her. He’d protected her and deserved to see this out to the end. Besides, he was learning a lot from hanging out with her. She liked that she could show him the other side of his Pollyanna city. No one should be ignorant of corruption.

“Do you really think he will? It’s one thing for him to stay in the reading room, but another to keep this whole problem a secret.” Vectar received a number of nods from those at the table.

They just didn’t know Akasha. She’d miss having sex with him, but she would be back…hopefully. It was that sliver of doubt that made her decision for her. “I think we should bring him with us.”

“What?” Sandale stared at her as if she’d fallen off the highest spire of Naralina and just stood up and brushed herself off.

She didn’t blame him. She wasn’t sure why she suggested it either. “It would solve the problem of him leading Grandall here. Plus, if we couldn’t trust him, that would mean you’d have to lock him up here, where again he could be discovered. Unless you want to kill him.”

“No.” This sentiment was voiced by all three fathers.

Now that she’d started, she could think of lots of reasons to take him with them. “He also has some pretty incredible abilities that could be very helpful outside Naralina.”

Sandale spoke up. “I noticed from the perpendicular lines and three dots that he is Kindred of Light. What is his ability?”

She grinned, unreasonably proud of Akasha’s power. “He has a different ability for each color in the light spectrum.”

“Each?” Ulik stared in surprise. “That is unheard of.”

Well, maybe his green light didn’t do much, but he still could produce it. She nodded. “Yes, and they could all come in handy.”

“What are they?” Vectar studied her as if he guessed she was really just thinking up excuses for keeping Akasha around.

“His yellow light lights up like a shiner. His blue light will show you what you can’t see with your naked eye like amobes.”

“Those really exist?” Sandale’s mom shivered.

“I saw one when Akasha showed me his light. I know, it’s a little creepy, but at least they do their job.” She laid a comforting hand on Pam’s hand across the table from her. She liked Sandale’s mom.
