CHAPTER FOURTEEN
âAre you crazy? What are you doing here?
âI might be,â Laine entered the undercover office of the LAPD, going straight to his neglected desk. âAnd Iâm going to find out exactly whatâs up with Corie Rickman.â
âWhat if someone sees you?â Mark stood in front of Laineâs desk. âYouâll blow your cover.â
âIâll take my chances.â The monitor screen blinked alive as Laine typed his password in and waited, at a painful level. Whoever came up with the notion that all Japanese were everlastingly patient had been strongly mistaken. Theyâd never waked a mile in a pair of geta. At long last, he reached the search page.
Mark continued to hover as Laine hit the keys to spell out Corieâs name. Again, Laine waited. The blood roaring in his ears didnât diminish as the results lined the page.
Corieâs name came up in six places, all on one warrant. Why hadnât Markâs search found them? Had his backup really run her through the system or lied to him? He hoped heâd missed it because his computer clearance wasnât as high as Laineâs was as a sergeant.
Laine read.
Mark broke Laineâs concentration. âBro, youâre white as a sheet. Whatâs up?â
âCorie was beaten by her husband.â His words were muted.
âHow do you know?â
âDaniel Rickmanâs complaint was on behalf of Corie. It was against Ronald Reynaud for assault and battery. Reynaud put her in ICU for two weeks. She miscarried, so a murder warrantâs been issued. Where the hell is this guy?â He pounded his desk so hard the pens rattled and the monitor wobbled.
âWhat are we gonna do with this information?â
âI have no idea.â Laineâs stomach dropped to his feet. Corie, the woman of his heart, had been hurt both physically and emotionally. How could he heal her? Would she even let him?
âWell, Iâll talk to the homicide guys and see what they have. You need to get out of here before you get nailed.â
âYou sure youâll follow through?â Laine began to shut down the computer, but punched the print button first.
âWhat makes you think I wonâtâ?â Markâs eyes widened and his bushy brows rose.
âYou didnât find much on your first look.â Laine gave him a hard stare while listening for the printer to finish.
âI misspelled her name. I spelled it with a K.â
Laine turned his gaze from Markâs as the realization that heâd unjustly accused his friend sank in. âSorry, bro. You did what you could with the knowledge I gave you.â He snatched the printout from the tray and stood. âIâm gone. Iâll check with you later.â
âSure. No problem. But Iâll take that.â He lifted the paper out of Laineâs fingers. âYou need to keep your focus. I was going to tell you at our briefing today, but four teenagers from Bel Air died over the last three days due to overdose on Ecstasy that we think they got at the ice rink in Beverly Center. And an assemblymanâs daughter is in ICU. That worsens the political climate, of course. The departmentâs getting more pressure to make an arrest.
