Chapter 16

“Bingo,” Cleona announced as she peered over Kevan’s shoulder. “Jacob David Emhart. We probably could’ve guessed that, but we really need to be correct. This formula has to work, and someone in the know has to see it.”

A search of Emhart’s name had yielded an astonishing number of results. Even so, having learned the man’s middle name, the next step was something of a puzzle. Kevan scrolled down the page, looking for a promising link while doing his best to tamp down his body’s reaction to Cleona’s close proximity. The last time they’d been alone in his house, he’d carried her to his bed. Immediately. Now, her intoxicating scent filled his head and her warmth reminded him that there were far more pleasant activities to share with her than surfing the Web.

Clearing his throat with an effort, he forced himself to focus on the task at hand, marveling at the level of self-restraint it took to keep his hands off her. “Let’s see if he has a website… There.” As the page loaded, he couldn’t believe their luck. “Look, there’s even a blog on it. Too bad we can’t post anything other than a comment.” He glanced up at her. “Unless he’s shared his password with you.”

The gritting of her teeth conveyed her frustration. “No, he hasn’t. Yet another time when a more talkative Array would be terribly useful. It’s as though having set us on the quest, he and the rest of the Array have deserted us.”

“Maybe, although anyone trying to save the world has to put in a bit of sweat and toil, wouldn’t you say?”

She squeezed his shoulder and gave him a tiny shake, apparently oblivious to the bolt of electricity she’d sent spiraling downward to ignite in his groin. “There you go being all reasonable. I’m ready to do this now. I mean, the polar ice caps are melting as we speak.”

Polar ice isn’t the only thing heating up.

“I’ll not argue with that,” he said after regaining some semblance of control. “But we aren’t going to change anything overnight, Cleona. I wish we could.” Chuckling, he added, “Are you always this anxious to finish what you start?”

“Hey, my college buddies didn’t call me ‘Miss Proactive’ for nothing. I like being a step ahead. Always have. Sitting around waiting for stuff to happen goes against the grain, big time.”

“There are those who say it’s already too late.”

“According to Mother Earth, it’s never too late, not while there’s a spark of life left in the world. That’s what being the Carrier of Life’s Preservation is all about: bringing us back from the brink of extinction.” She drummed her fingers on his shoulder, once again seemingly unaware of her effect on him. “Maybe there’s something else we know that we don’t know we know.”

“Like what?”

“Oh, I don’t know… Some sort of carbon dioxide scrubber for the atmosphere or something that could be introduced into the atmosphere to filter out or reflect some of the sun’s radiant energy. Anything to stop the polar ice from melting.
