BAIN

I had no fucking clue how many rats were in Sal’s horde, and that was a problem.

That ignorance put me at a disadvantage.

And that disadvantage was making me edgy and tense, which in turn was hindering my ability to convince Taylor to come with me.

I wasn’t involved in the local shifter scene. I didn’t mingle with any of the magical people in Austin.

Being the apex predator in a territory resolved most disputes before they began. My arrogance in relying on that precedent and assuming no one would fuck with me because I was a dragon had been a strategic error.

When I moved to the area, I held myself apart, planning to create a good life here and avoid the political bullshit.

A mistake, because the fucking idiots of the world, like Sal, perceived my lack of involvement as weakness.

And because I appeared weak, Taylor was now at risk.

Sal wanted her. What man wouldn’t? She had the figure of a pinup girl, the face and heart of an angel, and a smile that could bring a man to his knees.

He couldn’t have her.

She was mine.

In truth now, but even weeks before when the rat had first laid eyes on her, I’d claimed her. At the time, I’d lied, and when Sal had sought verification of my claim, he’d found none. My scent should have been all over her, and it wasn’t.

But my word should have been enough. Would have been enough, if the rat didn’t perceive me as some talonless, fireless weakling.

Sal and his followers thought the population of a city and the technology of the twenty-first century would keep me in check. That I’d been neutered by modern life.

They were wrong.

If Taylor were safe, I wouldn’t wait to track down Sal and fry him. I’d already given him a warning, and he’d thrown that courtesy back in my face. Worse, he’d threatened my woman.

He had to die.

If Sal’s death didn’t solve the problem, I’d search out his entire horde and end them all, whatever their number.

But Taylor wasn’t safe. Not yet.

I was certain Sal would come for her. She was a fucking goddess, and she didn’t even know it. And funny. And smart. And generous. And close to her family.

Not that a rat who groped women in bars would bother to learn half of that.

But what he knew was enough. He wanted her. Probably even more because I’d defended her.

As much as I wanted to gouge out his eyes, rip his intestines from his body, and slow roast him, I couldn’t do shit until Taylor was safe.

It was going to be damn difficult to keep her safe when she wouldn’t come with me.

I told her to come. When that didn’t work, I asked. Then I begged. “Please” might be a little-used word in my vocabulary, but I’d beg her if I thought it might work.

I couldn’t just take her—much as I wanted to. She was my mate.

I promised her an explanation—with visual aids, for fuck’s sake—and her laptop and a stop at her home to pack.
