Chapter Sixteen

With every step he took the staticky murmurs in his mind grew louder. It brought back memories of the shortwave radio the guards used to listen to or more aptly, run the dial from one end to the other again and again. The damned thing never got a clear signal, but the sons of bitches refused to give up and admit defeat. If they could make out the words, or at the very least a tune, they left it play for days and days on end.

Bits and pieces of conversations and a word here or there jumbled up with a buzzing so much like an angry swarm of bees that the hair on the back of his neck stood on end was all he could hear. No matter how loud, nothing remotely coherent developed. Nothing like the ghosts of the past or the demonic hauntings threatening his sanity, these voices had a message…something he consciously knew he absolutely needed to hear.

Tuning out everything and everyone around him, he concentrated on only the noise between his ears. There had to be a way to bring out the conversation, to leave the static behind and figure out what he was missing.

“You okay, Sab?” Stone asked, his tone heavy with concern as his hand landed on his shoulder and squeezed the knotted muscle.

Shrugging off his twin's touch, he pointed at his ear as he shook his head, knowing his twin would understand and not take offense at being made to wait. There was no backing down or turning away, even Herne was tuned in and listening. Together, they would get to the bottom of the new signals or…go a little crazier trying.

Letting himself be led through the heavy steel door at the top of the steps then down the hall, more words became audible as tiny bits of the static receded. Now, all he needed to do was figure out what language they were speaking. The dialect had a sing-songy syncopation with sporadic guttural sounds he thought were being used as inflection.

“Do you know what they’re saying?” He asked Herne, hoping the ancient Dragon King could at least head him in the right direction.

“Ah’ve got nae feckin' idea an' Ah thooght Ah’d heard it all.”

Not waiting until they were in the great room, he pulled his hand from Lore’s and headed straight for Shavon. Shocked when Lore appeared at his side and returned her hand to his then holding tight, he worked not to be irritated with her suddenly smothering attention.

“I’m okay. I would tell you if I wasn’t. Just need to speak with Shavon for a minute, if you don’t mind,” he projected directly into her mind.

“Okay.”

Her tone sounded hurt, or maybe it was resentful, he really couldn't tell and cursed his social ineptitude and awkwardness from years in captivity. Not ever wanting to cause his Mate any pain, he immediately squeezed her hand and softened his tone as he reassured, “But you are more than welcome to come along.”

Relieved when
