Chapter 12

Taylor watched with contentment as Mindy and the band—which, to be frank, should be regarded as her band—finished up their last song in the set.

“Awesome vocals, man,” one lingering member from another band exclaimed backstage.

“Did you tour with Metal Leopards a couple years back?” someone else asked. “That was amazing. Your voice is so rich.”

Taylor shook his head firmly, ignoring further questions as he watched his mate do what she loved.

Taylor had never thought he would sing for another person in his life, let alone sing in front of an angry crowd.

But seeing Mindy alone on that stage, set adrift by her incompetent bandmates, stuck between her passion and unwillingness to simply give up where others had, had nearly broken Taylor.

The dragon in him had simply taken over completely, allowing him to do whatever it took to protect Mindy from that awful moment.

Taylor was just glad to have helped.

Finally, the last song finished to applause from the audience, and Mindy and all bowed before the lights turned off and they headed off the stage.

“Great job, Keith,” Rob said as Keith smugly accepted the praise.

To the side, Mindy came up to Taylor directly, and he welcomed her into his arms.

“You were wonderful,” he said.

“No. You were wonderful. You totally saved our butts,” Mindy said, sounding harried and relaxing into his arms. “And your voice is beautiful.”

“Hey, Taylor?” Another male voice interrupted his time with his mate.

He just looked over at Joey, standing there with his hands in his pockets. Even if he wasn’t the worst, Taylor held no trust for Mindy’s presumed friends.

“That was really solid of you to do. We owe you one. Big time,” he said, looking away from Taylor as he spoke.

“Accepted,” he said, not letting go of Mindy.

“Wasn’t he great?” Mindy said. “He was great.”

But before Mindy’s excitement could build too much, Keith appeared like a breath of putrid air, flanked by Rob. Around them, staff from the venue moved equipment offstage, placing it in a specified area off to the right to make space for the next band. In the audience, people milled and fraternized, waiting for the next act.

“Thanks for nothing,” Keith said with a grimace, tucking his hands into an olive-colored canvas jacket. “Now people are starting to ask if the Wonder Sharks are getting a new lead singer.” The jealousy in his voice was as unsubtle as a foghorn.

“Maybe they need one,” Taylor said, enjoying the blush of anger in Keith’s face as he stared him down.

Keith, flustered, muttered something angrily beneath his breath and stomped away, followed by Rob. Joey, always stuck somewhere in the middle, just said another thanks and wandered off.

“I don’t know what his problem is,” Mindy murmured. “He was never quite this bad before. It feels recent.”

Taylor had a few ideas. All of which involved male jealousy that only inferior men tended to experience in the presence of superior protectors.

Then again, who cared?

Mindy’s hand was on his cheek, cupping it and turning him down to see her again.
