Chapter Ten

Winter

I can’t deny that he’s even more attractive than I remembered. I can’t fathom that someone like him saved my life. Something about the way he walks and carries himself. There’s a confidence and a strength that’s intoxicating. I can barely take my eyes off his strong, rugged face and his wide chest.

Still, I force myself to look ahead.

It’s also the first time I’ve been in a Ferrari. I had no idea he had this kind of wealth, and I can’t help but wonder if it’s leased. That would make more sense. I’ve heard that some dragon shifters have a good amount of money, because of their influence, but a brand new Ferrari with a perfect leather interior that turns into a convertible? Extravagant car for a man in his twenties. I’m not sure which coven he’s in yet, but he’s doing quite well for himself.

“Do you want to listen to music?”

I turn my head, glad the warmth of the sun has settled on my skin. I had assumed it was going to rain all day.

“Okay,” I reply, brushing my hair back behind my ear. “But I don’t mind the silence.”

“Good. I hate listening to music when I’m driving.”

He brushes past my head to reach up and hit the button on the ceiling to lower the top. That sensation emerges again as our skin almost comes into contact. I’m not sure why it happens―maybe a natural reaction from our abilities. Or an inherent warning from a deeper part of myself that I’m in a car with a dragon. Hard to believe, but I know it lies dormant within that frame…which is no less than perfect. The shifters are known for being the epitome of attractiveness, and he’s no exception.

“Right down this road,” I tell him, pointing towards the street on the right, past the red light and traffic. “The apartments at the end of the block. Parking is nearby. I’ll show you where.”

He pulls off from the main road, bypassing the heavy traffic, and bringing us through the downtown core. The street is long, and the apartment buildings and houses get older the farther we drive. The apartment isn’t easy to find, but it’s still an oasis to me. The only place I’m able to concoct my potions without having my mother behind me, judging each of my movements. Being in the coven requires me to always be available to my family. Getting away is a privilege, and one that I never take lightly.

My hands shake in my lap out of nervousness as we get closer to the apartment building. In the years I’ve been using it, I’ve never had anyone over. I’m not sure if it’s against the rules. When my mother handed me the key for the apartment, to keep the ingredients for my potions, she never mentioned whether having someone over would be an issue.

She wouldn’t have guessed that it would be a dragon. Neither did I.

I point to a large red brick building on the right side of the road.
