Monday morning arrives, and I decide to work from home for the day. There should be no possibility of being overheard with some of the conversations I’m planning to have this morning.

The first is short and sweet. Martin O’Brien, leader of the local Chamber of Commerce for Bozeman, is a man of good standing in the community, married for 30 years to his high school sweetheart, and having an affair with my secretary, Anna, for the past 10 of those. I’ve known for some time, but have kept it in my back pocket, knowing there would be an opportune moment to share.

“Martin, Sean Willard.” The moment he answers my call, I jump straight in. This man is a schmoozer and could sweet talk your grandma into donating her life savings to charity.

“Mr. Willard.” He falters for just a second before speaking, and I wonder if Anna’s told him how I found her sobbing in the company kitchen a while ago, after Martin had told her he’d never leave his wife.

“You and I have a mutual acquaintance, only you’re acquainted personally, rather than professionally.”

“I—er, I don’t know what you mean.” The falter becomes a stutter.

“Your secret is safe with me, Martin, but I need you to do something for me to keep it that way.” He doesn’t need to know that his wife has been having sex with the gardener each Tuesday and Thursday. I have ears everywhere and fingers in many pies.

“O-okay.”

“The Chamber recommends local small business before bigger corporates, including Hardy Designs. I need this not to happen. Hardy Designs should be removed from the Bozeman Recommends website forthwith.”

“But—” I wait out the silence for the inevitable. “Of course, Mr. Willard. I can see there have been some negative reviews for the business. It is standard procedure for a business to have their listing suspended pending investigation into the validity of the reports received.”

“I’m glad we understand each other. Give my regards to Belinda, won’t you?”

I end the call with a chuckle. I wonder if Martin will call a florist to send flowers or just head straight home to make sure his wife, Belinda, knows how much he loves her. Thankfully, Jose the gardener is busy with the mayor’s wife’s bush on a Monday.

My next call is to the chairman of the county planning committee. A tail on Dylan over the weekend paid dividends, as he went to see three prospective clients who would no doubt want fancy cabins built on the little parcel of land up in the mountains. I have nothing on the chairman, but he does owe me a favor, after I made a significant donation to his campaign for office earlier this year. It’s how I like to do business. I scratch your back, you scratch mine.

After some small talk, Malcolm asks me what I’m calling for.

“I know one of your campaign pledges is to ensure residents have access to affordable housing in the community, Malcolm. You know as well as I do that a
