Since I’d got back from my ghost encounter in the park, I had mostly been sitting on the sofa with a box of cold Korean fried chicken perched between my chest and my stomach. Mom was letting me get away with all sorts of things today, and as long as I vacuumed up the crumbs after I was done, she was going to let me eat dinner riding the sofa while watching TV. These were unprecedented times.

I’d hardly spoken since I’d seen Sliced Cheek. Mom probably thought I was just mindlessly staring at the TV, but I wasn’t even paying attention—I was still thinking about that face.

How could I not think about Sliced Cheek? He was hard to forget. Next time, although I really hoped there wouldn’t be a next time, I was going to try that thing Mom did and wave my hand across my face.

I practiced it. I tried it at slow speed: one hand swipe to the left, one hand swipe to the right. Nope. Not good enough for a ghost like Sliced Cheek. Then I tried it double-time, with twice as many hand flicks. Four hand flicks, and fast. This seemed like it might work on a malevolent ghost…and possibly mosquitoes.

The box of chicken was empty except for the last little bits of crispy coating littering the bottom, and I finally got up to throw it away. But not before I tipped the corner of the box into my open mouth and let all the last crumbly bits cascade down like a waterfall of deep-fried rain.

It was getting late, and I was more than ready to go to bed. Just before I stepped into my room, Mom shouted, “Crumbs!” from somewhere in the apartment.

Right. I guess I had told her I’d clean up, so I needed to vacuum. A promise is a promise.
