Chapter Nine

Christmas Eve Eve, 2013

Five minutes later, Stella was sitting on the bench, wearing her shoes, but not wearing skates, with her eyes closed.

“Can I look yet?” asked Stella.

Kevin didn’t answer.

Stella felt something rub against her legs. Her eyes fluttered open. Next to her, there was something big, brown, and furry, and it wasn’t meatloaf leftovers she’d accidentally left in the oven for a month that had grown mold. Moldy meatloaf didn’t have eyes, and it didn’t have big, sharp teeth!

“Kevin, you nearly gave me a heart attack,” whined Stella. “I guess I see why you had me keep my eyes closed.” Stella looked and saw that Kevin’s clothes were arranged in a neat pile on the bench. He must’ve gotten naked to shift. If he hadn’t, his clothes would’ve been ripped to shreds.

Kevin nudged his head in the direction of the ice rink.

“Oh, you want to get on the rink?” asked Stella.

Kevin roared. Oddly enough, even in his bear form, his breath still smelled like gingerbread. The pair had snacked on a bunch of broken gingerbread scraps during the event at the community center.

“I’ll take that as a yes,” said Stella.

Stella walked over to the rink and let Kevin in. Kevin slipped and slid over the ice. It wasn’t as graceful as his skating. In fact, it was downright hilarious to watch a big beast like Kevin’s grizzly rush over the ice.

Stella leaned over the railing to the ice rink. She watched as Kevin slid over the ice, on the pads of his feet, his claws leaving light marks over the ice the way that their skates had added grooves to the ice.

Kevin came to the edge of the rink and nodded toward the door to the rink.

“Oh no,” said Stella.

Kevin nodded his head. Flakes of falling snow fell off of Kevin’s furry head. It kind of looked like he was shaking dandruff off of his head for some shifter focused shampoo commercial — a thought so silly that it made Stella giggle.

“You might be able to do that, but I can’t,” said Stella.

Kevin nodded his head at the door again and let out a small roar. It was more bark than roar. It didn’t scare Stella. After all, she was used to Kevin being big and a bit loud. That was also her style, given she was made of curves and sass.

“Fine — but I’ll only stand on the edge,” said Stella.

Stella walked to the door. She opened the door to the ice rink and put her foot on the ice gingerly. She immediately started to slip.

“Nope!” said Stella. “Nope, nope, nope!”

Kevin came over to the edge of the rink and lay down in front of it like a bear rug. Kevin motioned over his back.

“What do you want?” asked Stella. “You want me to get on your…your back?”

Kevin nodded.

“You know what? At least if I do it, I can say I did it,” said Stella. “Guess I’m gonna spend my Christmas wish hoping that I don’t sprain a frikkin’ ankle.
