Fighting Back

The Doctor and Gisella turned to run. But two more Krashoks had appeared at the other end of the corridor.

'Doctor — we're trapped,' Gisella realized.

They both ducked as the wall beside them exploded. Energy bolts flew down the corridor.

The Doctor and Gisella dodged and ran. But they were being driven away from the airlock exit and towards the approaching Krashoks.

Then suddenly there was an explosion from behind the attacking Krashoks, and the corridor started to fill with smoke. A black cloud rolled over the Krashoks, heading for the Doctor and Gisella.

'What caused that?' Gisella gasped.

' N o idea,' the Doctor admitted. 'Bit of luck, though.'

They dived into the smoke. The Doctor had hold of Gisella's hand. With his other hand he felt along the corridor wall. The dark shape of a Krashok trooper loomed out of the fog for a moment.

Then it was gone.

Soon the Doctor and Gisella were emerging from the other side of the smoke into clear air.

They tried not to cough, knowing that would alert the Krashoks to where they were.

From inside the rolling ball of smoke came the sound of blaster fire and a body slumping to the floor.

'They can't see what they're doing,' the Doctor said quietly. 'They're shooting each other.'

'What do we do now?'

The Doctor was looking down the corridor away from the smoke, towards the airlock. 'We get out of here,' he told her. 'And we've got a few thank yous to say as well.'

In the airlock doorway, Gisella could see two small figures peering out into the corridor.

There was a boy with dark-rimmed glasses, and a girl with long blond hair. They were grinning and waving.

The Doctor and Gisella ran to the airlock.

' Q u i c k l y , ' t h e b o y said. 'The s m o k e w i l l clear soon. It's only a mix of hydrocarbons in colloidal suspension. Harmless but thick. Only it disperses very quickly when the surface tension breaks down.'

'Kleb made it in the Chemistry lab,' the girl said proudly.

The Doctor ushered them all through the airlock and down the transparent tube that led across to the Space Brain. As they hurried through the tube, he introduced Gisella to Kleb and the girl, Caffey.

' G l a d the Doctor managed to rescue you,'

Caffey said.

'Oh, he's always doing that,' Gisella told her.

He's getting quite good at it.'

'Oh cheers,' the Doctor said. 'Let's do marks out of ten for the rescue effort later when we're safe, shall we?'

'Aren't we safe when we get back to the Space Brain?' Gisella asked.

'There are Krashoks everywhere,' Kleb said.

' W e w e r e lucky to be able to sneak into the Chemistry lab. But the Physics block is off-limits.'

'Is that where the Krashok equipment is?'

the Doctor asked.

'Afraid so,' Caffey told him. 'Miss Renfrew and Mr Gershwinn tried to get in, but the whole area is sealed off and guarded by these Krashok things.'

'Bad news?' Gisella guessed.
