Chapter 11

Next morning, the alarm went off and Morgan smelled bacon and eggs. This prompted her to get out of bed and hurry to the shower. When finished, she raced down the stairs and followed the aroma of food to her kitchen. She stood in the door and watched.

Caleb was there fixing breakfast as he chatted with Elisabeth and Jonathan. Elisabeth drank coffee from a china teacup and Jonathan enjoyed his from a thick mug as he read a newspaper with President Biden on the front page. Caleb smiled and scrambled the eggs in a bowl and put bagels in the toaster.

“Good morning, everyone. Jonathan, you seem to have survived the clutches of the evil Esmey. And Caleb, the kitchen smells fantastic, with bacon and eggs on the stove,” Morgan said. Caleb nodded at her.

“Oh, my dear girl. You have no idea how frightening that woman is,” Jonathan replied. He looked at her over the top of his glasses.

“But she can’t really hurt you, right?” Morgan asked as she sat at the table, next to Jonathan.

“Esmey can be destructive. Tear his arms off, that sort of thing. He’ll get back together again, but it’s nonetheless a disturbing experience,” Elisabeth said as she blew on her coffee to cool it.

“That’s right. I don’t want to be bisected, dissected, or ravaged by that woman,” Jonathan said and folded the newspaper. He held his mug up to Caleb. Caleb took it over to the pot and returned it to Jonathan with a fresh refill.

There was a ding from Morgan’s phone and she took it out of her pocket to see that the security system camera signaled someone had been on the porch. The video was blurry, so she walked to the front of the house and opened the door. No one was there. The radio in the library was on, playing a waltz. Morgan put her phone back in her pocket and returned to the kitchen to make a cup of tea. Caleb turned the kettle off and handed her a cup of piping hot tea that had already been steeped.

“You are really fitting into the routine around here,” she said.

“So are you,” he answered.

“Last night I gave Caleb the instructions for cleansing the house. He’s going to get the supplies today and I’ll help him set everything up. If you don’t mind, that is,” Elisabeth said.

“No, of course not. I appreciate all the help you can give us. This is not my area of expertise and I don’t think Caleb minds, either. By the way, did any of you turn on the antique radio? It’s playing a waltz in the library. My phone indicated someone was on the porch, too, and no one was there. Sometimes it can react to a leaf, or movement at the street.”

“No, no one came to the door. We also haven’t touched the radio. I wonder why it started playing?” Elisabeth asked.

Morgan sat at the table again and Caleb put the breakfast in front of her. She picked up her fork and took a bite.
