4.2 Problem Discussion and Definitions

Percentage differential relay is normally utilized for unit protection of a transformer, generator, and busbar. Biased differential characteristics are divided into two to three slopes as per the demand of accuracy. Figure 4.1 shows a simple two-stage characteristic of the biased differential relay. Portion “OA” is decided as the restraining portion which covers 5% of normal rated secondary current which is considered as a basic setting i1–i2 covered by “AB”. Slope K1 is considered as bias setting, 120% of rated secondary current with normally 30% slope covered by BC [19].
