CHAPTER 27

Sunlight, weak and hazy, broke through Raquel’s uncovered window and pestered her like a younger sibling. She was going to turn away from it and eke out a few more hours of sleep when she realized that she’d fallen asleep at all.

The last thing she remembered was talking to Taylor. They’d realized how late it was; nearly five in the morning. Hours had evaporated without their notice as they talked about a hundred different things.

They’d started to say goodbye, but had somehow been pulled into another conversation. Raquel couldn’t remember what about. At some point, she must have fallen asleep.

Opening her eyes, she reached for the phone that had fallen back on the pillow she’d been using to prop it up. Expecting a dark screen, it surprised her to find Taylor.

Asleep, Taylor’s hair was wild and covering part of her face. Raquel reached out to push it out of her eyes before she curled her fingers into a soft fist.

She wanted more than anything in that moment to touch her. To wake her with featherlight kisses placed down the column of her neck. To slide down her body and part her thighs and drink her in until Taylor woke up mid-moan and reached down to tangle her fingers in Raquel’s hair. To pull her closer so she could go deeper and harder, tasting her so completely that she couldn’t breathe. She wouldn’t stop until her name was on Taylor’s lips and intertwined with her pleas for mercy.

Regret was a sour, cold pang in Raquel’s stomach. They could’ve slept together last weekend. She could know what Taylor’s body felt like asleep in her arms rather than guessing. Know how heavy her breaths were when she slept. But it had taken her way too long to realize that she wanted to know those things. That she wanted to actually sleep with her and not just have sex with her.

Raquel let herself watch Taylor for a little while. Let herself long for her until the baby monitor on her nightstand crackled to life and reminded her that she had more to do than stare at a sleeping Taylor. Her father would be up soon.

With a heaviness in her chest she didn’t expect, Raquel pressed the red button and ended the call. Nine hours and twenty minutes they’d spent on the phone and it had barely felt like any time at all.

Rolling out of bed, Raquel plugged her nearly dead phone into the charger and dragged herself into the shower.

Thoughts of Taylor swirled in her mind like nothing else in the world existed. She recalled the passion on her face when she talked about her dream wedding.

Raquel hadn’t been expecting that. She didn’t think people even cared about getting married anymore.

Her own wedding had been a forgone conclusion—a ceremony at the Catholic Church she and Max’s family attended since they had immigrated from Cuba. A reception followed where they hadn’t gotten to pick the guests or the music or the food.

Washing the conditioner out of her hair, she imagined herself in Taylor’s fantasy.
