CHAPTER EIGHTEEN

KODY

“Is this the last box?” I shout inside.

“Yep! Luther brought the rest in.”

Kicking the door to the SUV shut, I struggle across the pavement. Across from Leila’s Bar, the newly purchased store and apartment buzzes with conversation. Everyone has gathered to move Emery in officially.

Finding a vacant lot in Reaper’s Hollow wasn’t exactly hard. Most people are running away from this place, never mind moving in and setting up base. I think we were all a little surprised when she actually followed through, uprooting and resettling back in this barren wasteland.

Setting the last box down, I glance around the space. It’s smothered in cobwebs after years of disuse but has a lot of potential. We’ve got experience fixing places up, and I’m sure Luther is drawing up mental plans as we speak.

“This place isn’t so bad,” I offer.

Emery hops up on a counter. “I’ve seen worse.”

“It’ll take some work, but we’ve got time.”

“I’m just glad my stuff survived; the wards I set up did a good job at concealing the apothecary. I’m surprised the coven didn’t find it.”

In the corner, Atticus is frowning at a huge crack in the wall. He’s been quiet while recovering from his little trip back home. While we went to pack up all her shit, he opted to stay behind with Emery and help settle everything for this place.

“They will track us down eventually,” he argues.

Emery shrugs. “We’ll wipe the floor with them this time.”

I flex my biceps, making her burst out in laughter. “I’ll kick their asses myself, no witchy shit needed. Call it the power of the brain.”

Atticus frowns even harder. “Sure. You can beat the coven enforcers to death with your towering fucking intellect. We’re bloody doomed.”

I flip him the bird. “Least I won’t get my nose broken.”

“Not unless I do it for you, dickhead.”

Someone smacks me upside my head, ending our argument. Luther walks in with armfuls of food in grease-stained paper bags, smirking at the pair of us.

“Leave the superhero shit to these two. You’ll embarrass yourself otherwise.”

“I’m perfectly capable of kicking ass,” I defend.

“With what?” Luther laughs. “Your fountain of utterly useless knowledge?”

I gesture to Atticus. “Like he said, with my towering intellect.”

“Could always launch books at them, I suppose.”

Emery and Atticus laugh in tandem, both looking at an empty spot in the room. I turn to face the cackling pair with my hands on my hips.

“What the hell is the mouthy ghost saying about me now?”

“She thinks you’re cute,” Emery answers.

“Or just an idiot,” Atticus adds. “You’ll never know.”

With a huff, I pick the box back up and stack it with the others. Luther wins me back over by passing me a huge sub packed full of cheese and meatballs. He doesn’t even look sorry, but I accept anyway. The way to my heart is obviously through my stomach.

Unpacking the rest of the food, he shouts for the others to join us. I’m scarfing down my sandwich when the rusted bell above the shop door tinkles. Annabelle glances between us all shyly, balancing several Styrofoam coffee cups.
