Unfortunately, in light of events to come, this second home, Aviva, was located in the heart of bustling and diverse Hollywood.111 As I was still the favored parent, Cordelia immediately called to say that she had been transferred to a new placement for girls who had fallen off the tracks in life. All of her phone calls to me would be monitored by staff there, presumably on the insistence of Mordecai and the DCFS. She would also be assigned a therapist, a new employee called Jo. Jo would work as part of a therapeutic team and so any information disclosed by or to Cordelia would have to pass through several filtering hands for processing.

As had been the case with Penny Lane, Aviva was also not a locked facility. As with Penny Lane, there was nothing legally that the staff could do to prevent a resident running away, but at least it had its own school onsite. Cordelia was to be required to attend this one as opposed to being allowed to select somewhere outside of the facility. It was Cordelia’s choice to go to Aviva. She was allowed to go there after having first given assurances to the DCFS that her AWOL days were over following her recent experiences in Oakland. Her focus would be on stabilizing her behavior so that she could eventually come home. As before, she would concentrate her energies on communicating better with me. Her frustrated attorney and social worker were not optimistic that Cordelia could keep to this promise. Neither, to be honest, was I.
