Chapter 15

I shoved past the guard and slammed the door in his face before he could get around to closing it. Then I leaned against the thick, polished wood and let out a shuddering breath. My knees wanted to fold, my entire body felt shaky, and there was this jittery, anxious feeling that I recognized as the feeling I got when I didn’t get enough sleep and tried to compensate with caffeine instead.

I had used a lot of power boosting Orion’s call and bringing White through Heimdall’s wards. Then I’d been forced to convert followers for Heimdall—tons of them. And making things happen when they went directly against everything I believed in was even harder than manifesting the things I really wanted to happen.

I wanted to slide down the door and sleep right there on the floor for a few days. But I could feel eyes on me. There were people depending on me. People who wouldn’t even be in this mess if it wasn’t for me. I forced my eyes open, looking at Rhys, then Chike. Even fixing my gaze on Orion was easier than looking at my newest roommate.

The others had become at least somewhat used to killing time while chained to my bedroom wall. They weren’t comfortable, exactly, but they were...at ease. When I managed to drag my eyes over to look at Derek White, I found the demon lord sitting against the wall, one leg stretched out in front of him, the other drawn up so he could rest his arm on his knee. His dark eyes were as serious and calculating as always, and even sitting on the floor, his entire demeanor said he was in control.

I pushed myself away from the door and stood up straight, not wanting to look weak in front of him, for some reason. I managed to keep from swaying too much as I crossed my arms under my breasts and looked down my nose at him. “Welcome to the party,” I said dryly.

He stared at me in silence for few seconds, then tilted his head downward, as if nodding agreement to something I hadn’t even said. “I’m sorry for taking so long to arrive.”

I narrowed my eyes at him. “You think I’m mad you didn’t come rushing to my rescue?”

Despite how tired I was, I still managed to work myself up to a good level of offended and pissed off. He thought I was just some weak human pawn. Some memory of a past life to be studied from afar like a dusty trinket on a shelf.

Flickers of old memories flashed in my mind. Of the arrogant businessman I knew. Of the shining demon prince smiling at me with warmth in those dark eyes. Of my sister’s blood and my world shattering, and wanting nothing more than to run away from the pain and confusion.

I might have needed someone to save me then. From my family. From myself. But not now.

He just watched me calmly. “Rushing to your rescue?” He lifted an eyebrow.
