I suspected my apartment looked like poor accommodation to a Glower, given that the demons were used to hobnobbing with the rich and famous. My Tether Society salary made possible a certain number of comforts, but I wasn’t really the extravagant type. So my savings account was large and my apartment small: an open-concept living area, a tiny kitchen alcove, and a bedroom that fit the queen-sized bed and not much else. There were a few touches of character in the simple, efficient design—the arch of the window frames, the castle-like molding of the baseboards—and I liked the feel of the warm, worn hardwood under my feet. The way the light from the tall windows showcased my growing art collection was a bonus.

If this Glower were unimpressed, she kept her thoughts to herself. She glided through the living room, touching the creased maroon leather of the couch, the matching sateen curtains, the little flat screen TV perched on the glass-topped coffee table next to a mystery novel I’d gotten halfway through and forgotten to bring with me to Jayden’s mansion. I couldn’t help tensing as her gaze fell on the paintings scattered across the eggshell-white walls.

“Originals?” she said. “I don’t know these styles.”

“They’re newer artists,” I said. I made a point of supporting emerging talent with my spending—they needed it the most, and there wasn’t anything quite as exciting as finding a piece you could tell showed someone on the verge of mastering their craft, but still with all the headlong enthusiasm of that upward climb. Of course, that made the artists vulnerable in other ways as well. “No one you should bother.”

Her gaze flitted away. I shook off the sense that I should be guarding my space from her and ambled over to the kitchen. I wanted some fortification for the conversation ahead of us.

“I’m going to make myself dinner,” I said. “Do you want anything?” To the best of the Society’s knowledge, Glowers didn’t need to eat or drink our food to sustain themselves. They fed entirely on the joys and creative energy of their targets—draining those emotions away, leaving their victims as hollowed and depressed as Rosa had become toward the end.

That thought made me want to take my question back, common courtesy be damned.

The Glower shrugged. “I’ll try a bit of what you have for yourself, if there’s enough.”

My fridge’s pickings were sparse, cleaned out in preparation for what I’d expected to be even more than a two-week absence. I’d only gotten off duty earlier today and hadn’t had time for shopping yet. I gave the counter a quick swipe with a cloth and grabbed one of the bags of frozen vegetables and cans of lentils I kept for days like this. Add enough hot sauce and you almost couldn’t tell the difference from a fresh stir-fry. Though I’d never have suggested as much in my mother’s hearing.

I had a few beers left in the fridge, but adding alcohol to this mix seemed unwise. I didn’t want the slightest chemical interference with my judgment.
