Rian

I slipped around the side of the large two-story house, right behind Talia. I was so close, I could reach out and touch her if I wanted to. Those were Nitro’s orders. Stay on your partner’s ass. Do not let yourselves get isolated from the team, no matter what. That’s how Killian had managed to get to Risa. He’d somehow separated her from everyone else, and by the time they’d figured it out, it was too late. They’d come back for her, but she was bleeding out, a knife just inches from her heart. There’d been too much blood loss, and they were unable to save her. Nitro wasn’t letting that same mistake happen again. We also had orders to check in every three minutes over our ear coms, like we had time to look at our watches and clock that shit.

“Check in, dammit,” Nitro snarled into his mic.

“Here,” Rian said quietly.

“Overbearing ass,” Talia muttered.

“Don’t have time for this crap,” Roarke growled.

“Here,” Bastian grunted.

There was silence after that.

“Jagger, check the fuck in,” Nitro snapped.

“I’m busy,” Jagger muttered.

“Doing what?” Nitro demanded.

“Taking a leak,” Jagger replied dryly.

“Jesus fuck.”

“No, I’m pretty sure he didn’t,” Jagger said lightly. “That wasn’t in the bible.”

“Shut the fuck up, Jagger.”

“Didn’t you just ask me to talk?”

I held my breath, but Nitro didn’t respond. As funny as my team could be sometimes, this wasn’t one of those times to jack around. We were about to infiltrate a house that we were sure held one of the families Killian abducted. A husband, wife, and two small children. Bastian and I had come up short in Dallas the day before, but information Talia and Roarke uncovered in Houston led us here. We didn’t have time to jack around like Jagger was, but I knew it was his way of dealing with the anger he was holding in check. There was a lot of rage thrumming through our team tonight.

“Ready to breach the side door,” Bastian said. “There’s one guard outside smoking.”

“Talia and I are ready at the back entrance,” I murmured. “There are two back here, but we can take them.”

Nitro didn’t ask if I was sure. He knew if I said we could do it, we would.

“Roarke and I are heading up the side of the house,” Jagger cut in. “Give us a couple of minutes.”

We were silent until Roarke muttered, “Balcony door off the top bedroom was open. We’re in.”

As soon as Nitro gave the signal, I sprinted across the yard beside Talia. We were on the guards at the back before they knew what hit them. I grasped the shorter one by the head and twisted hard, like I’d been taught. There was a sickening crunch, and then I was dropping him to the ground and dragging him to the bushes. It wasn’t the first time I’d been forced to snap a neck, but I hated doing it. I was afraid I was going to have nightmares for weeks now.

My thoughts turned to Demon, as they had a lot that night.
