The Togo Insurrection and Nigeria's Insecurity

The Togolese military revolt of January 13, 1963, involving the assassination of President Olympio and the overthrow of his government, put in a clearer focus the problematic link between issues of colonial boundaries and subversion in the regional politics of decolonization.82 For Nigeria, the dramatic event in Togo showed even more clearly how the security interest of the ruling regime defined its leadership role in the decolonization process. The Togolese conflict can also be studied as a situation through which the U.S. attitude and role in the Nigerian-Ghana conflict relationship can be evaluated, particularly the impact of the conflict on Nigeria's attempt to deal with the underlying security threat posed by Ghana.
