Chapter Ten

A Big Problem

Evan moved purposefully, not needing to weave through the large casino crowd as people generally got out of his way. He was a master of his emotions and wore a blank expression, hiding his pure rage.

Days had passed since he last saw the elusive cocktail waitress with his flash drive. The information on the drive was invaluable, and he couldn’t afford to wait any longer. He needed answers, and he needed them right away before the trail went cold.

Fortunately, the last couple of days hadn’t been a complete waste. It had taken Evan that long to case the entire Fantasia hotel. He liked to be aware of his surroundings and was confident he could find his way around the hotel blindfolded if needed.

He was thankful for this knowledge and knew exactly where he needed to go to find the information needed. Evan strayed from the casino floors and went higher. He went beyond the hotel’s public areas and ended up in an empty corridor on one of the upper floors.

The easy half of his voyage was over, and he ran into his first obstacle at the next turn. A massive man stood stationary at the end of the hall. He looked bored, but that boredom cleared the moment he noticed Evan.

“Off limits, friend. Are you lost?”

Evan removed his jacket and tossed it aside as he advanced on the larger gentleman. He didn’t slow his pace for even a second.

“Didn’t you hear me?” the man asked again when Evan was a few feet away. The large man raised a hand to stop Evan but didn’t foresee what would happen next.

Evan wasted no movements. He couldn’t lose time fighting the guard and risk calling attention to their altercation. He caught a firm grip on the guard’s outstretched hand and twisted it, forcing the large man to his knees. He gripped the twisted arm under his armpit and used his free hand to sock him square in the face.

The hit was swift and powerful enough to knock the large man out. Evan let go, allowing the unconscious man to fall to the carpeted floor.

Evan’s excursion was just beginning. Fortunately, he didn’t have to worry about surveillance cameras until he reached the final corridor. Guards stationed in different groups tried to stop him at every step of the way. However, Evan had the element of surprise and caught the men with their pants down each time. He left a trail of the unconscious in his wake, some ending up hurt severely when they tried to resist.

He tried to keep his destruction contained to avoid enraging his employer. Evan fought his way through and finally arrived at his destination: the surveillance room.

Asking for access was out of the question. He couldn’t risk Richard finding out that he had misplaced the drive. His reputation would never recover from it.

He had cleared out all of the guards but couldn’t afford to be caught on either of the cameras watching the hall in front of the surveillance unit.
