The silence is palpable. We're all sitting in the living room except Jane, who's locked herself in the cell downstairs.

As I look around the room, all of us seem lost in our own heads, trying to process what just happened.

‘Did Torun’s people get Foley at least?’ Paris asks.

Vic shakes his head. ‘The fucker got away.’

I slam down my mug at Vic’s words, my calming chamomile tea sloshing over the table.

Vic looks at me apologetically. ‘I know how much you want him, Sie.’

No, you don’t.

‘This was the first time he’s been out in the open in a place where we could get to him and the fae let him get away? This is bullshit! You should have let me get out of the car and go after him myself. If I had, he’d be in our cell right now instead of his daughter!’ I rage, wishing with everything in me that Jane had been nowhere near that shitshow tonight.

The only positive thing that may possibly have come out of what happened is that I now know for certain that Jane is a human. Whatever I thought I saw or felt with her at the strip club before must have just been a coincidence. No supe would ever have been able to endure what she did in that street and not let something of their other side show no matter how disciplined they were. It’s just not possible.

But the rest of tonight was a calamity wrapped in a catastrophe, and for what? For Foley to escape and Jane to be, perhaps irrevocably, hurt for no reason other than Vic’s ego.

My eyes flash at my best friend.

‘You made me choose revenge over her!’ I accuse Vic and I don’t know if I can forgive him for it.

But maybe the person I actually won’t be able to forgive is myself.

‘I didn’t make you do shit!’ Vic thunders in return. ‘You wanted revenge and you decided that sacrificing Jane was worth it if you could get to Foley. I’m not denying I’ve made mistakes with her, but don’t you dare try to lay that shit at my door, Sie!’

‘He wasn't scared of us,’ Kor mutters, interrupting what is likely to become an all-out brawl between us very soon. ‘That human needs to be taught a lesson on how dangerous the Iron I’s can be.’

‘Well,’ Theo says, standing up and going to pour himself yet another drink, ‘at least Jane learned it, huh? And, hey! Bonus! We got to humiliate her, got to watch her own father and her own kind look at her like she was a piece of shit. And then, the best part I thought; we did nothing as he beat her in the street. Great job, everyone.’

He raises the cup in salute to Vic. Then he takes a gulp, swears under his breath, and knocks it all back, shattering the glass at the wall when he’s done.

‘I mean, what the fuck just happened?’ he asks loudly, the bourbon and his anger clearly loosening his tongue because he’s not usually the one who stands up to the MC President.
