CHAPTER 18

Dagnie sat outside her family’s longhouse, and with slow movements, picked up a dry flower from a basket, separated its leaves, and put them in another basket, but her mind was far away.

She found herself searching for Arodim. The worry that lived in her heart didn’t falter for even one beat.

He’d been beyond exhausted and pale once they’d returned from the In-Between a few days ago.

Elhewri had chillingly told them she’d take care of him, and just like that, they’d both disappeared without another word.

Arodim hadn’t been able to talk. He’d been so weak and had to support himself against a tree.

Dagnie had wanted so badly to hold him, to comfort him.

Videdal was as calm, as ever. The people took care of their daily chores, unaware of the danger that lingered over everyone’s heads.

Happy voices of playing children filled her ears.

A few men further down, near another longhouse, discussed something.

She couldn’t hear what they were saying, but judging by their loud laughter, they were having a good time.

“Don’t do it,” Istrid said as she exited the longhouse with a basket in her hands.

Dagnie flinched from her sister’s sudden appearance. “Do what?”

“Search for him. He’s not going to show up in the middle of the village.”

She looked down. “I know.” But she couldn’t help but hope. “Do you think something has happened?”

It was weird that Arodim had managed to stay away for several days, but maybe it had something to do with Elhewri “taking care of him”.

What if she’d told the other gods?

A cold chill went down Dagnie’s spine.

She wouldn’t do that…would she?

Trusting the goddess was hard, but she’d never do something like that, right?

Not until they’d been given a chance to fix the curse before any more gods and goddesses were involved.

“I don’t know.” Her sister sighed and sat down next to Dagnie.

Dagnie continued scanning the town and all the unaware people. Her heart hurt. The last thing she wanted was them dying and becoming ghosts.

She could barely imagine a fate like that for her father, aunt, or the thralls living in her family’s longhouse.

They were all good people.

Damn, she didn’t even want that fate for Jorulv.

No one deserved it.

Istrid let out another sigh, this time filled with frustration. “Can you please stop tormenting yourself?”

She clenched her jaw. “You’re not helping.”

“Knowing you, all kinds of scenarios are running through your head right now, but you’re only making it worse for yourself.”

Her sister wasn’t wrong, but she couldn’t help it. This was a life-and-death situation, and Arodim not showing up for several days was not a good sign. Not feeling his presence at all had been one of the worst—

Dagnie shot to her feet. Her heart skipped, then thundered. “I can feel him.”

Yes, she could.

His presence swept over her like a gentle touch, but it felt distant, weak…

“Crap,” Istrid cursed. “I can feel him, too.” She stood as well and looked around. “He’d be a fool to show himself here.”

“He won’t.” She shot her gaze to the forest and took a step forward when she felt his presence linger among the trees.
