Nerves flutter through me as I approach the banquet hall, or whatever other dining room I've been summoned to. I don't know how anything works inside the palace, it's never something that's interested me.
Matia doesn't seem to care about the seriousness of the situation we're in and bounces along at my side without a care in the world. I wish I felt the same, but the only thing I can focus on is who else might be there for a meal with the princess. I doubt I'm going to be the only person the future Pharaoh will have invited. And if I am, then it raises all kinds of other questions.
Like why she's taking an interest in me at all.
A pair of double doors swing open for me and I step inside, surprised by how small the room is, but taken away by its beauty. A young woman who can only be a few years older than me turns in my direction and offers me a smile.
It takes me a moment to process that she's the princess, but considering the only other person in the room is a handsome guard with a lioness by his side, the deduction is reasonable.
"Blessed Priestess," she says.
"Your Majesty," I give a stiff bow, already panicking as I search for the right greeting in Egyptian.
"I'm not Pharaoh yet," she reminds me.
"Right, I'm sorry, Your Highness. I'm very sorry for your loss." My voice sounds shaky to me, but I doubt either of them will notice.
"Thank you." She seems taken aback, but I can't put my finger on why. "Shall we sit?" She gestures to a table spread with far more food than the two of us can eat, especially with the nerves making me want to throw up rather than start eating.
I take a seat, holding my nerves at bay the best I can. "This looks lovely, Your Highness. Thank you for inviting me here."
"As this dinner is just for the two of us, perhaps we should forgo all that and you should call me Iset," she responds, taking me by surprise.
"I'm not sure that would be appropriate." Because it isn't, right? I shouldn't be calling a princess by her given name.
"Don't I get to decide that?"
I give her a tight smile and reach down to pet Matia, gaining strength from her proximity.
"What did you call my brother when you were spending time with him?" she asks without even skipping a beat.
"I wasn't aware you knew about that." Though I should have done. Everyone seems to know about it. I hope my ill-advised connection to the prince will fade over time, because I'm already fed up with it affecting how people see me.
"I do."
"I called him Ramesses." There's no point in lying. She might already know.
"Then you can call me Iset."
How have I gotten myself into this situation? I didn't ask for any of this. I try to keep my face neutral so I don't expose any of my thoughts. "In which case, I'm Ani."
"Much less of a mouthful than Ankhesenamun.
