There were nights after this when Bird would stretch out beside Miriam. He propped pillows up under her knees, asked her continuously if she was doing okay, and then he rubbed her feet with cocoa butter. He rubbed her feet as though she’d been walking twenty years barefoot. He massaged her hands and head, and Miriam would pretend to fall asleep, but she was never asleep. This time with Bird was such treasured time.

Besides, how could she sleep with such insistent beauty beside and within her? She did not want to miss a second of it. Not the touching, and certainly not the singing. Bird resting his head near her stomach and singing “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough.” Miriam would join him when he sang that song, and together they said, “To keep me from you.”

In the middle of that singing, in the middle of their voices coming together, their mouths met, hungry and wet, and they went into each other again and again, and every way they could. And they talked about what it meant to create a life in this time, in this place.

They talked about all they had going against them, but also all they had going for them. They talked about how this baby was going to be safe, how this baby was never going to go to war. Never going to scrape its knuckles to the ground digging for love and acceptance. This baby would know peace.
