‘What do we know about the fighting in Metro,’ I ask, trying to move the subject away from Jane. Our mate. ‘Is it spreading?’

‘Not as yet,’ Maddox replies. ‘I’ve had Iron keeping tabs on it. It’s still going on, but only within the borders of the seven cities that were attacked.’

‘Is no one else going to ask how the fuck Maddox got us out of the Mountain?’ Paris asks suddenly. ‘No one gets out. Ever. So how did you pull it off?’

My gaze find’s Maddox’s. ‘More to the point,’ I say, ‘what’s the price of your help?’

Maddox grins. ‘You’ll be happy to know that the debt’s already been paid, my friend. As to how I did it, well, I have many favors owed to me. I simply called one in.’

My eyes narrow and I Iook over at Korban. ‘You paid it?’

‘Not exactly,’ he growls.

‘Jane?’ I ask, unable to keep the snarl contained as I focus back on my viperous friend. ‘What did you make her do, Julian?’

‘Nothing she wasn’t willing to do,’ Maddox says, clearly enjoying how enraged I am. ‘Just a small issue I had, that’s all.’

‘A small issue?’ Korban growls. ‘Krase lost his mind and Maddox had him feed from Jane in case it cured him.’

‘Like Sie,’ I growl, stalking forward and taking Maddox by the neck.

I let my glamor up at the same time. ‘You shouldn’t have brought Jane into this. It’s not up to an on-call girl to settle debts between clans.’

I let my power out. All of it and he grunts as he feels it drive him down, but he’s as strong a leader as I am. He stands his ground, not letting his knees buckle under the force of it.

‘Are you still going to pretend she’s an on-call girl?’ he goads.

I squeeze harder.

‘It’s not what you think,’ he grinds out finally. ‘She only gave him what she wanted to give him. I didn’t make her do anything.’

‘If you didn’t, it’s only because forcing her wasn’t necessary to get the outcome you desired,’ I say low, trying to keep some semblance of control.

I finally let the power wane and push him away from me.

‘Don’t pretend to be magnanimous, Julian. It doesn’t suit you.’

‘Touché,’ he says, rubbing his throat and breathing heavily. ‘I can see you’re overcome with worry for your female, so, though you attacked me in my clan’s own home, I’ll take this no further.’

I don’t say anything more. I leave the room immediately. Regardless of what Korban said, I hope that Jane really wasn’t forced into more than she’d bargained for just to get us out of that place.

Why did she agreed to help at all?

I sneak up the stairs, hoping none of the others catches me. I want to see Jane properly for myself.

By myself.

I don’t want Theo worrying next to me, Paris’ jokes to lighten the mood, Sie breathing down my neck. I just want to see Jane, make sure she’s okay.

I’ve been burying my feelings and my worries since the attacks because I needed to keep everything together.
