Eleven

Logan admitted he enjoyed the coffeehouse last night more than he thought he would. Of course, the crowd was minimal, so there wasn’t the suffocating feeling he had Thursday night at The Wolf Inn. Madison being there was also a calming force, something—someone—he could lean on for support.

He sighed as he stared at his reflection in the bathroom mirror, running a hand through his dark hair. She had only been there a few days, but the thought of her leaving bothered him more than the fact that rogues chased her. Luca had called him again that morning asking if he thought Madison was well enough to move to the safe house. Logan told him no, but he had lied. Madison was well enough for anything she wanted to do, but he couldn’t stand the thought of her safety being in anyone else’s hands but his. Not that he thought the Pack Hunters would fail at the task. Not at all. They would protect her with their lives, but Logan felt that job was now his, and his wolf agreed. Whether or not Logan had been looking for a mate, his wolf told him Madison Cross was the one for him, and the more Logan was around her, the more he agreed, but how did she feel? He hadn’t exactly been the most sociable person since he found her on his front porch, behaving in his usual distant and sullen manner. He needed to change that, but how? For two years, this is how he’s been. A loner. No one in his life for longer than it took to pick up a paycheck or pay a bill. How do I change that overnight? he wondered as he left the bathroom.

“Good morning,” Madison greeted him as he entered the living room. “Did you sleep well?” She sat in one of his easy chairs, Dax curled at her feet and a steaming cup of coffee between her hands resting in her lap. Her hair was still damp from her shower, the T-shirt he loaned her to sleep in covering the parts of her he desperately wanted to explore. As it was, her long legs drew his gaze with the supple way they begged to be opened and plundered. “I made coffee. I hope that’s okay.”

He forced his gaze to her deep blue eyes as he squelched the lust that stirred his manhood. “You can make anything you want,” he assured her, smiling. “Consider this your place for as long as you’re here. And I slept great, thanks. Ready for some breakfast?”

She blushed at his words, and Logan loved the color it brought to her cheeks. “Only if you let me help,” she said as she moved to stand. “You’ve waited on me hand and foot over the last few days. It’s my turn to return the favor.”

He gave her a skeptical look. “You sure it’s wise for you to be on your feet that long?”

She nodded as she started toward the kitchen. “Dara is a great healer.
