When Katrina didn‟t show up for work on

Wednesday, Carlos called her. When she didn‟t answer

her phone, he sent Sierra to her house. The door had

been open, and while there had been no sign of a

struggle, Katrina was not in the cottage. Her bag pack,

an old raggedy thing that she refused to part with, had

been found only feet from the door with all of her

personal belongings in it. He‟d alerted the sheriff

immediately and had organized his own local search

for her.

It was now Tuesday night, exactly seven days

since her disappearance, and there was still no trace of

her. Joe had apologized countless times for not

following her home as he‟d been directed, but Carlos

didn‟t want to see the man for at least another month.

He‟d given the instructions specifically because of

something like this. Most people didn‟t understand the

pull that Katrina had over men, but he did.

He knew what she was—a succubus pretending

to be a human. He‟d known from the moment that

he‟d stopped to pick up an eighteen year old girl whose

body, despite being covered from head to toe in thick

winter apparel, had tempted him with sweet promises.

It had taken him days to realize that she wasn‟t

aware of what she did to men, that it was

unintentional. From then, he‟d begun escorting her

home. Over the years, she‟d become as close to him as

his sisters. It was why he was so worried, and angry.

“You want a shot, big bro?” Sierra asked, lifting

up a bottle of Irish whisky from her station behind the

bar.

He shook his head. Sierra and Helena were

working tonight, not because he needed them but

because they knew their brother was in a mood.

Usually calm and relaxed by nature, Carlos was

primed for... something.

Lifting his head, he eyed the clock above. It was

soon to be midnight. The bar usually closed at two on

Tuesdays, but he was thinking of closing up earlier.

There were only a handful of people there anyway, and

most of them wouldn‟t object to him telling them to

get the hell out, although he hoped one macho guy

would.

“Bar‟s clo—” He halted mid word when the door

opened and Katrina‟s customer walked in, his limp a

bit more pronounced. He took a seat at the bar,

seemingly unaware that every eye watched him, and

looked at Sierra, and then Helena. Blinking rapidly, he

eyed them again before clearing his throat and asking

in a slur, “Where‟s Katrina?”

Maybe it was the way he said her name, or

maybe Carlos was just pissed off, but whatever it was

had Carlos leaping across the bar for the man, who

had no clue what hit him. Screams and shouts erupted

immediately, as some people fled and others tried to

pry Carlos off of the man.

“Tell me where she is!” he screamed as he

attacked. He hit him twice in the face, once in the

nose, feeling pleasure as he heard a distinct crack, and

the other on the chin. Carlos was a big guy, but the

man beneath him, despite being a drunk with a limp,

grabbed him by the collar and tossed him back like he

weighed nothing. As Carlos righted himself and

prepared to pounce
