Chapter Thirteen

I looked to Ina, and I knew she could see the intensity in my gaze. She had her necklace and spent time with Ben, thus far unscathed. I trusted Ina, which meant I had to trust her judgment.

“I’m sorry, I have to go. It was nice seeing you, Ben.” I scooped up one last smoked salmon and poached egg on toast on the way to the door, but the flavor was like cardboard in my mouth. My stomach twisted into my throat. Andre. Andre, Andre. His name repeated in my head like a mantra.

“I’ll drive you to where your partner was abducted,” the vampire said in the same low frequency as before. We stepped outside. “They won’t expect a second operative to attempt an extraction so close to Smoke’s attempt.”

My breath hitched. I stopped. The Ispolniteli weren’t planning on retrieving Andre.

“No,” I said.

The vampire turned, but I’d bitten my wrist and dissolved into a wisp before his hand came. Then I was spinning. The earth beneath me felt like it shattered with the ferocity with which I was traveling. Andre’s call, the pull of our connection, felt like gravity, like the strings of matter itself. An aerial glimpse of two men standing on either side of a body flashed.

I plummeted onto hard stone.

There was a clatter and crack. Softness gave way beneath me, warm and wet. One man’s cracked skull was a foot from my shoulder, pink and splattered. I’d collided with him upon entry. Snapping the Light Charm around me, I rose.

The sterile room smelled of burnt flesh. Andre was screaming. He was flattened bare chested onto a table by a sliver web, just like the hotel, but his eyelids were cut off. His mouth gaped, one fang missing. His fingernails and toenails were removed, pooling blood onto the metal table. A man stood over him with forceps. He looked up at me over Andre’s body, and his eyes glowed a blueish-white like Mullins’s, except he consciously reached for a blade from the table.

I flashed beside him and drove my Light Charm-coated hand into his ribs, releasing my power. The blow should have electrified him and broken his ribcage.

His blade, glowing like his eyes, plunged to my belly.

I pivoted, uppercutting his jaw. He dropped but used his momentum to roll. He produced a second blade. He stood in sword stance as if he lived in that position like training with those blades was the task he completed all day, every day, since he first drew breath.

I summoned my fire.

He butterflied the blades into the inferno, attempting to lop off both my arms at once. The swords and his body withstood my flames. I dropped to my knees and rolled, but he countered the slashes in the opposite direction within an instant. The tip of a blade caught my flank, and white-hot pain seared through me, like my tolerance for light magic was weakened. The floor cracked under the heat and exposed the earth beneath. Another basement. The room was below ground.
