MAX

“You’re distracted.” Eli swept my feet, catching me by the arms before I landed on my ass. “You’re never this easy to take down.”

My skin tingled under his touch, his hands lingering just a moment longer than necessary as he stood next to me, both of us breathing staggered breaths that had nothing to do with the fight.

I had no idea what was wrong with me, but I couldn’t stop thinking about kissing him, about touching him—about pressing him up against the stone wall and climbing him like a tree.

“There’s a lot to be distracted by.” My voice was hoarse and breathier than I’d intended. “We are in hell.”

When I’d woken with a ravenous hunger, I’d assumed that food would satisfy the craving. It was growing more and more clear, however, that I was starving for something more than nourishment.

My tongue wet my bottom lip, my body leaning slightly into him—not enough to be intentional or even visible to an outside observer, but enough to prove that the magnetism between us was growing impatient, demanding even.

The way his eyes heated when they dipped to my mouth told me that he was just as starving as I was.

At first, I thought it was just my succubus flaring to life after being suppressed and locked away again—hungry with want and eager to strengthen me the only way that particular power could.

But we’d come across two other people, when we’d snuck down to the kitchens for more food, both absurdly stunning in that way demons always were—and I didn’t feel this needy draw to either of them.

It was just Eli.

His fingers traced down my bare arms where he held me, the simple friction enough to pull a small breathy moan from my lips.

I took a step back, breaking the spell he had on me.

He cocked his head to the side, brow bent in question. “Why do you keep doing that?”

“Doing what?” I took another step back.

He took one forward. “Pushing me away.”

“I don’t know what you mean?” One more step back in this dance.

A dark grin twisted his lips. I couldn’t tear my eyes away from them. “I think you do know what I mean, Max.”

I bit my bottom lip as my back hit the wall, the cool stone a welcome contrast to the heat blazing through me. Only now there was nowhere else for me to go, to escape him.

But he didn’t pursue me further, his body still and coiled as he studied me with a ravenous hunger all but pulsing around him.

“Eli, we’ve been over this. We’re fr—”

The smile evaporated from his face as he leaned into me, his forearms flattening against the wall on either side of my head as his eyes met mine—sharp and unflinching. “I dare you to say it, Max—dare you to tell me that we’re just friends.” I opened my mouth to do just that, my breath catching in my throat before he added, “but only if you actually mean it.”

My heartbeat hammered like a wild
