TUG-OF-WAR WITH GOD
Here’s another thing I’m learning: to give my cares to God and not take them back. This one’s easier said than done. You wouldn’t believe how often I pray something like, God, I know You can do all things, so I give this problem to You. I trust You to handle it. Then five minutes later, I’m worrying again or trying to manipulate the situation.
Between the ages of fifteen and seventeen, I was a passenger in three separate car accidents. The third time, the driver of the car I was in ran a stop sign at a highway intersection. A Blazer struck my side of the car at fifty-five miles per hour. Ever since then, I’ve been frightened to ride as a passenger, and I rarely do. As a driver, I’ve never had a traffic ticket or a wreck. My wife calls me “Grandpa driver.” I call it wise discretion.
I always want to be in control of the car. When someone else is driving, I tend to offer obnoxious advice, because my survival instinct cries out for some kind of control. Sometimes I have to surrender control and trust the outcome to someone else, but this doesn’t come naturally to me.
With God, the “control” I have to surrender over and over is only an illusion. I never really have control of my life and circumstances, even when I pretend to.
Have you acknowledged that truth? You’re not in control. You never have been.
If that’s true—and it is—then why do we try to exercise power that has never been ours? (That was a rhetorical question, but the answer has a lot to do with human pride.)
When I finally get around to genuinely trusting the only One who’s in control, I discover amazing comfort. God never panics. I love that. Never in history has God said, “Wow, I didn’t see that coming. What in the galaxy am I going to do now?” God knows more about what you’re worried about than you do. And He … is … in … control.
Can anyone completely trust God and be free from all worry? I’m not sure if that’s humanly possible. That said, my wife is the closest person I know to being truly worry free. She’s filled with a genuine faith that I envy—but she wasn’t born that way.
After giving birth to our second child, Amy faced some unusual health challenges. Sometimes the whole right side of her body would go numb. Her doctors were concerned about her future health and safety, and they gave her every kind of test you can imagine. They couldn’t find the cause, but they took every precaution. In her mind, she became convinced she was dying. Fear took complete control. She couldn’t sleep for days at a time, and she’d cry, terrified.
I didn’t know what to do. Only one word described my feelings: helpless. My prayers didn’t seem to work. I didn’t know what to say. Like my wife, I was off-the-charts worried. Hundreds of people were praying for her.
